Damo - all the birch green vw's I've seen in OG paint have been lighter (not as bright) but admittedly after 40 years or more of UV exposure it is much lighter than when it rolled off the factory floor. The way I would describe it, its more pepperminty....however today when doing repairs and sanding through the high build primer in spots to original paint which happened to be close to the new paint the colour looked almost identical. Maybe its just because it is so glossy and bright?

Anyway, the dash and inside is painted as mentioned before - a halogen light was shining on it in this pic which makes it look a lot less green than it is, looks nice though.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul14_dash.jpg

Today saw some repairs to various dents, chips etc after sanding back the high build primer which showed up problem areas. This is Steve who is now working for me a couple days a week - his help has been most welcomed as it means things can be finished a lot sooner.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul14_prep.sized.jpg

After the basic repairs were done the body was prepped again and reprimed in high build primer. This will be rubbed back tomorrow and painted in colour.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul14_reprimed.sized.jpg

Damo, do you think a Wednesday pickup would be possible? Another splitty arrives tomorrow for resto so room is going to be limited. Cheers mate

Well she is finally painted!

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint1.sized.jpg

Being that I couldn't do it in the booth yet (if someone feels like giving me around $10K to finish it I'll happily accept!)....there was a bit of dust and the odd bug (one can be seen in this pic) that settled in the fresh paint.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint2.jpg

The Devilbiss GTi Pro gun is working really well despite the underpowered compressor (if someone feels like giving me $5K for a second hand screw compressor I'll happily accept!)....nice and glossy off the gun.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint3.jpg

The hoist is fantastic! (I won't go on about the cost of the hoist.....but people reading this can hopefully understand why such a paint job costs a bit, I'll happily work for half my current labour rate if someone wants to pay all my overheads) :)
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint4.jpg

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint5.jpg

The colour is more along the lines of the original (not quite as pepperminty as I first thought)....it is just much brighter and more glossy than the original.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint6.jpg

The roof came out a treat (again I could have spent more time smoothing out the dents but the line had to be drawn somewhere (as per above discussions)).
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint7.jpg

Pic is a bit blurry unfortunately.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint8.jpg

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul15_paint9.jpg

Now the hard and expensive part is out of the way Damo can finally work towards getting this beast back on the road (and on the strip hopefully!).

Steff, this particular paint was just their single stage 2K range as they couldn't mix the Birch Green in a base coat. So far so good for the PPG (2 cars done in their solid 2K range) but no experience yet with the Delton or Cobra - although will be doing a quickie job on a mate's bay window in Cobra in the next few weeks so that will be a good test for the lower end products.

Looking forward to using their ceramic clears (but will wait till the booth is ready for that!).

Cheers again for your help to date.

Thanks Dave :)

Although we didn't intend going this far (after all we started out only originally giong to do rust repair and not repainting.....then only painting the outside.....then only painting outside and underbonnet.....then outside, underbonnet, dash, door jambs.

Now after all that we were going to leave under the decklid and bonnet as is, but I just couldn't live with myself. Although each resto is different and I work towards the budget of the owner, at the end of the day I can't let something go out of the shop I wasn't happy with, thus I had to squirt some paint under the bonnet and decklid.

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul16_underbonnet1.jpg

Tomorrow will see a bit of de-nibbing from dust specks, and a couple little runs to fix (can't wait for the lights when the booth is running so I can see what I am spraying properly!)
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul16_underbonnet2.jpg

Damo will pick it up tomorrow night then I'm onto a trio of splits (different owners) - next to no rust repair in one (but a as high a show quality paint job as one can get), lots of rust repair in another (with no paint job at all = rat), and lots of rust repair in the third with a mid level paint job.

All on different budgets but all should be lots of fun....I love this job!

As a teacher I love the work I do educating young minds but looking at your work Alan always makes me wish I had accepted the apprenticeship as panel beater I knocked back when I was sixteen.

Keep up the top work. Looking forward to the splits.

Mods.

I think Das needs his own section on the forum.
Dasdubers corner or something.???
Watching his resto's are awsome and give people an excellent idea on what someone has to go through during the painting process.

Excellent work as always Al.

Damo, You would have to be chuffed with the way your car has turned out. It looks awsome.

cheers

Thanks Judy, Jace, Matt and others.

I'm pretty stoked with how Damo's bug has turned out given I didn't spend too much time on the body work (rust repair was 70% of the hours spent on the project). Damo seemed pretty chuffed, and although I'm sure he'll find some of the blemishes/nibs/small runs as he spends more time with it....hopefully his chuffness will remain for a while to come!

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul17_done1.jpg

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul17_done2.sized.jpg

Damo arrived tonight with his brother to pick up the bug so we lowered it onto the pan and bolted it down.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul17_done3.jpg

So with this picture my involvement in Damo's resto is over, he can now update the thread as it progresses (c'mon mate, get that stonking type IV built will ya!)
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album572/Jul17_done4.jpg

Best of luck with the reassembly Damo, have fun!

Nice job Alan.

I notice you painted this one & choptop with the guards
loosely fitted. Do you have any drama when your spraying with the overlap
from the curve of the guards to the flatness of the side panels?

No dramas mate - just have to be more aware of the overlap when shooting the front quarter panels - each stroke is finished on the guard, so when I then shoot the guard I just do a quick pass on the edge that mates to the body.....thus avoiding runs in the quarters and guards.

I've been getting used to the new paint (PPG) and a relatively new gun (only shot a couple cars with it) so I'm getting a couple more "flow adjustment meters" (ie. runs) than I like, but fortunately in discrete places and relatively easily fixed.

Is that paint a colour then clear or is it shiny paint straight off the gun?

Lovely work, I bet Damo slept in the shed last night ;)
