Unfortunately I prefer performance , and it was sadly lacking in that department.
I was a bit sad last night on the way home because the results were not as good as I had hoped.
11.66@114.13(felt lean)
11.67@114.68(richened it up down low, (probably too much since that was the only pill-step i had for below sea level conditions) It felt better, but
time cards dont lie)
11.48@116.34(took fuel out of mixture above 7000, much better)
11.70@115.77(lazy launch)
11.69@115.59(clutch slipped about a car length out, then wheel stood)
The night was very cold and it caught me out a bit with the fuel system.
As above, the last run showed clutch slip, so I will have to service that.
That is now 45 runs on this engine so I think it is time to upgrade.
I have the Dyno day on at the end of July so I will at least have to sus out the clutch before then, and then retire this combo afterwards.
I think at this stage that the smaller exhaust tubing did increase the torque down low,
but it has lost about 10hp overall on this combo.
With finer fuel system tuning I could get it to be equal,
but unless I can get those primary lengths down to the optimum of 26 to 30"(currently 34) I will have to go back to 2" plus tubes.
Thanks to Pete, Rod for the snakes (and the energy pep that they gave),
Stanley, Col, and Andrew(13BVW) for coming out in the cold for support!

Saw you out at the test & tune last night, got one photo of you racing, my camera wasn't in top condition lol. I was very impressed with the car,
was the first time I had seen it run before and I had a nice little grin on my face when i saw the low 11's popping up on the timing boreds. Nice

Thanks for the cool photos Tim.
I really like that first 'action' shot.
I have had time to go over all the numbers and realise now that despite the MPH(hp) being down on previous bests,
the ET to half track was not bad considering the track conditions and fuel tune.
The 1/8 mile ETs were all better by a tenth than previous SIMILAR 1/4 mile times.
7.37@91.61 (lean)
7.41@91.84 (way rich)
7.26@92.63 (leaned mix off up high)
7.47@92.48 (slow start)
7.44@92.44 (slid clutch off start)
Also the 60 foot times were mostly better than what I ran at Warwick, except for those runs where I stuffed the start.
1.612
1.612
1.566
1.683 (doh!)
1.654 (doh!)
Life aint so bad when you see it from a different perspective.

When I got to the track, the air was very good and I wanted to richen the system just a tad.
Unfortunatelyy I had no fuel pills other than a massive step which was my only option.
Other than that, the new exhaust may have moved the torque peak to a lower RPM.
=lower HP,
=lower mph.
But it(the 116.34mph run) was less than 2 mph down from my best of 118.2.

Starts
Hi Dave,
I'm enjoying following your post.
I looked at the pictures above and I think the new rear guards without the tail lights look really nice. Its a much cleaner look.
On the video I though the start looked very clean and rapid. There didn't seem to be a lot of suspension movement and the car looked nice and
straight. I bet it has taken a lot of work to make it look so simple.
How much clutch should you use on a start? I heard a guy from Competition Friction saying that he teaches the V8 Supercar Drivers to do starts. He
said a good start uses the clutch for about 2.5 seconds up to about 70 km/h. He said the guys that do poor starts spin the wheels and lose a few
places.
With that in mind I let out the clutch too fast, get a bit of wheel spin and I've never ever smelt the clutch.
Would you recommend using a bit more clutch than just dumping it? I suppose having an open diff would make a difference because the wheels spin easily
and its harder to bog down the engine.
Keep up the good work.

Leaving the start is a bit touchy some times.
You need to have JUST enough clutch clamp,
and RPM,
to match the torque,
at the rpm that you like to use.
I currently use a three puck that is only 180mm diameter,
but it has a fairly high clamp force of 2700lbs when new.
With my old blower engine you could leave the line smooth and fast from an idle,
but now with this normally aspirated engine it needs at least 5000 rpm too leave the line hard.
If you either have too little rpm,
or do not slide the clutch it will bog the engine down.
If the clutch never wore out,
you would set the pressure so that it just slips a little going into 4th gear,
but I have set it at maximum now and it probably lasts about 30 to 40 runs before needing surfacing
and re-setting of the clamp height (with the built-in spacers).
I think with road radials you may be able to get one wheel to spin off the start, but on a sticky start line and with slicks, the clutch normally does
the work,
unless you pump up the tyres quite hard.
Unfortunately you have to use a set-up that works,
or can be made to work for different conditions
through out the day or at different tracks through the year.
As an example, The big jamboree typically has excellent track but poor air(HP) until the night comes,
and then a cold winter Test and Tune will have a slippery cold track
but more HP.
So many variables, but you just deal with it on the day.
Consistent 60 foot times generally make for a very consistent car, even if you dont quite get your shift points right.

Starts.
Thanks for the explanation Dave.
So your clutch glazes over or burns or something? Is that why it requires resurfacing?
Is your pressure plate drag race only item? Do normal pressure plates have the adjustment you mentioned?
I'm surprised you run an open centre diff. But it still spins both wheels when you do a burn-out doesn't it?
Sorry I'm such a novice, I should probably start a drag racing 101 post.

No worries CT.
Ask anything you want.
The pucks on the disc wear down and it loses pressure,
but also the shoe on the clutch can get warped
(as can the FW) with the heat that can be developed.
The clutch on my car is much the same as most things on my car, home made.
Where a standard clutch bolts down to the step on the FW,
mine sits on spacers that I can either shim up,
or machine back to control its installed height.
You could use the clutch on the street with the right disc,
but it does rattle a bit when disengaged.
It uses a conventional diafragm rivetted into the cover(Holden diafragm I think),
and a shoe that floats like most muli-disc deals.
(but mine is a single disc & dual when boosted)
Yes it sometimes spins just one wheel in the burnout,
but once you get them spinning the other one usually catches up
as the first one gets sticky.
This can be hard on the spider gears and shafts,
but I added more clearance on the shafts and extra oil holes in the diff.

One wheel spins and gets sticky so the other one starts to spin too or instead. That makes sense.
I took a video some years back at the Wednesday night off-street drags at Eastern Creek raceway that demonstrated that but I didn't realise that is
what was happening.
Here's a bit of a yarn. If I can find the video I'll have a go at posting it on youtube. It's really cool.
I had a metalic brown cal-look oval as a daily driver. Greg Ward and I thought it would be fun to bolt his spare 1916 in the car and have some fun at
the drags. He said I should drive because it was my car. But I maintained he should drive because it was his engine: and he tends to drive it like he
stole it.
The car had hard-as-a-rock 165R15 Remington cheapie brand tyres. Greg selected second gear in the stock 4.12 box on the burn-out bit and gave the
engine 7000 and dropped the clutch.
In the video you can see smoke coming out from the driver's side guard and then the engine not changes and smoke starts coming out of the passenger
side guard and then the car disappears in tyre smoke. You can hear the other spectators laughing and the commentator saying "That's a very tough
little beetle".
There was a Charger in the other lane waiting for the beetle and the smoke to clear. When the lights went green the beetle took off at high revs and
the tyres just make a slight screech for maybe half a second and it took off. The race looked close from where I was and the commentator said "I tell
you what it looks pretty close at half track" and you could hear the surprise in his voice.
The charger ended up winning and the oval did a 14.9.
There was so much rubber inside the guards and inside the rear bumper at the end of the evening. But the tyres gripped better after that.

Well, next event is the dyno day on Saturday the 28th.
I have fitted some radial tyres to some 7" rims, 225/60-15 Dunlops,
so as not to wreck my slicks,
and have left the combo as I ran it last except for some minor fuel system adjustments.
I would like to see 190@the wheels,
but this all depends on the dyno and what the correction factors are.
Last time I ran, it did about 116.5 mph and weighed 1775lbs (807kg OH CRAP that is heavy!).
So I will report back at that time to see what happens.
Most interesting thing for me, will be the RPM at which peak toque and power occur.
