Well after almost 6 months to the day since I put a window in a piston the TAT is running again with some new mods.

Since then I have added a counterweighted crank, ARP rod bolts, deep sump, heavier valve springs and retainers, comp ratio from 6.5:1 to 8.3:1, welded fan and stage 1 Kennedy clutch. (and obviously new pistons and barrels)

Additional mods are an MSD 6AL and wideband O2 sensor.

Car mods are small ally fuel tank and a fully overhauled front end with adjusters (no more baja look)

I actually had the engine in the car last weekend trying to fire it up but had a minor hicup which forced me to pull it and take the heads and two barrels off. All will be revealed when I get my virus ridden computer back from the computer shop Monday. Lets just say high humidty was not my friend.

pics soon

and thanks for your advice along the way Dave.

yeh yeh....trying to do this at work but boss won't leave me alone at the mo.

This is what happens when you crank an engine with the spark plugs removed trying to get oil pressure on a cold and rainy winters night and then let it sit over night even with a sheet over it.
It tends to make this awful noise the next day when you go to start it. Lucky it didn't start and I was patient enough to go looking for the noise.
Looks a lot worse than it was, however I had to get two of the barrels lightly honed.

But now it's all fitted up has been running. Dumped the oil and changed the filter with no nasty surprises.
Now I just need to install the MSD and wideband ready for TnT after dyno day.

Finally finished and ready for dyno day drags.

MSD and wideband are in although the readout for the wideband wasn't working so it's gone back.

Best of all I put it on the trailer I built for the first time today and towed it with my Lancer. It has a max towing capacity of 1000kg's so I took it to the registered weigh bridge where I had the tralier weighed and they came in at 960kg's. Trailer on same scale was 360kg's so car must weigh 600kg's

ok here we go again.

Pulled the engine down yesterday after the dyno day drag night.

Let me paint the pic before you guys clip me around the ears. Sitting in the staging lanes for almost 3 hours in 12 deg. my car is a pig to start with a cold SU and I've been caught out with a flat battery trying to crank in the staging lanes before. To prevent this again I started the car every 20mins or so to avoid this.

Only problem in doing so I inadvertantly ran the tank level down to a point where it most likely sucked a gut full of air.

Result....after fiting a brand new set of Mahle pistons and barrels and doing break in and one 15sec run.
4 rooted pistons, one of which was starting to create a window and 3 of which were minus the skirts not to mention scoring to the barrels.

Now I could be all bitter and twisted but now I get to spend more time in my shed doing what i love doing although pissing $500 into the wind keeps me awake.

Whats next.....I'm going from 87mm to 85.5 for some extra barrel thickness and i'm (read DB is) going to machine the skirts off the pistons as I''ve got a full set of perfectly good 87mm pistons without skirts but are of no use.

Can't see the point in the skirts except for generating debris to float around in the case. if i'm wrong I'll take it on the chin.

I still plan to run into the 12's or better so stay tuned. Can't wait for Warwick because it always works their.

Stripped the rest of the motor on the w'end and all is good.
bearings are perfect so just a seal kit and new 85.5 P&Ps to replace the 87's.

I'm looking at it as practice building engines. Trouble is i need practice looking in my fuel tank.

Hey Stanley it's all part of the fun.
Try to get some pistons that have holes behind the oil ring not slots, they are much stronger.
Have you thought of putting a dcoe on it? It will pick up power!

Hey Stanley, love your car & engine setup, its a very neat install.

Just a quick one regarding your skirt problems (and I don't want to tell my grandma how to suck eggs here, so tell me to shut up by all means!) but a couple of things to check: first off I have been told that a c/w crank even at a stock stroke will limit your choice of pistons... secondly I dunno if you're using stock rods, but if you are they have offset small ends and need installing a particular way around.

One good thing if you drop to 85.5's is that it will ease of detonation a little with the reduction in CR.

(but you know you'll want to run more boost right?! hahaha).

Out of curiosity, what fuel are you running? How good is Aus. pump gas? Here in the UK petrol's pretty good really. I'm currently looking into using E85 in mine for better anti-det. properties, do you guys get that?

Good luck anyway, it looks awesome!

a few pumps in nsw have e85, from memory there is one in eastern creek...... iv heard...... so its not very widely available yet.... they are looking to introduce more soon though..... should be something to look into, apparently u dont loose any power and gain safety but it does use a bit more fuel due to the alco content.....

Dude, Hav'nt read much of this thread but that that looks like its pinged its nut off all the way, what comp, and boost are you running. Also from what I've learnt Mahl pistons are not a fully forged piston, only the top 5mm is forged and won't handle the pain your giving it. Remember such through systems have no way of cooling the intake air. Hate to burst you bubble.

Good luck, turbo's are nice but a takes alot to get them right especialy on an aircooled engine.

Such positive words..............
The Mahle pistons are semi forged not fully forged.
They are more than enough for Stanley's ride and when he has fuel in the tank they will be fine.
I have made over 200 rwkw with Mahle 94's and Marks green bug that just ran tens has Mahle 92's. YES 92's!!!
Get back into it Stanley it will be fine, even with that stinky carbie! More boost and methanol inject it!

Stanley(Andrew) will have it ready by the time Warwick is here.
New pistons are ready to go on and everything else is in tip-top shape.

I love the stories about mahle pistons.
Sanley was using cast 87s and we are about to try ome more cast pstons, but this time in 85.5 size.
It is after all a very low budget operation....."Tight Arse Tuesday".

The 94s are a forged piston.
You cant cast half and forge the rest.
In fact the 94s used to be the same forging as the 92, only larger on the outside,(see inside says 92),
but I have not seen a new set lately...perhaps tey have changed their manufactuing method?
Wallys set made 280+ wheel, and have held up for years.
...but there is no doubt that there are stronger forged pistons out there,
but the mahle does have a specific market that they are designed for.
They are very affordable.

Yes once Stanley keeps the fuel tank full he should be set.

Build it.
Tune it .
race it.

Easy hey?!:no::lol:

The reason why they have been labeled not fully forged and only semi forged is because the moulds used are not as strong as the a full forged mould thus not being allowed to be pressurised/weight as much as a full forge like a Je.
This is a much cheaper option and is still forged, and as we know more than enough for most VW's around. This is why you have the cast type look inside the piston and a Je is nice and smooth. The cast pistons have pieces of steel in them for strength.

How fast has yours gone?

Wholly shit I've been slack.
Actually i've been doing a course on CATIA 3D modelling...now that is the shit.

As DB said 85.5 pistons have been sourced and we've machined the skirts to clear the CW crank and hopefully to stop them breaking off by other means.

Can I add at this point that the only reason I have had dramas ie lean out, is purely from sucking air from running the tank too low on both occasions. Prior to that I drove it for 18 months ran some rounds of the willowbank street series and Warwick. The damage on both occasions was a result of one run.

Engine is going back together next weekend and will be running the weekend after ready for Warwick. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post. All comments welcomed +ve or -ve.

And your right Nick the SU was ok for original intention but has out lived it's use. I do have a plan that involves either a holley or side draft weber/dellorto and methanol. It may also include a supercharger.....:smirk:

Also a guy was having a look at it over the weekend. After I explained it was an Aussie built german beetle with a turbo off a nissan and a dissy from a mitsubishi along with some other bits which aren't standard he commented that it was a bit like frankenstein. My daughter thought that was pretty funny so that is what it has now been christened.
