Dyno, I do not need to list them - suffice to say that they are still out there. Not all VW owners are members of VW clubs or online forums.

That is correct re; the club/forum scenario as you mention, but there ARE those of us who have actively been keeping a global register of these beasts
for a couple of decades now ... I'm sure the rest of the VW 38's are out there too, as are the other 400 odd Hebmullers. Now, until they all turn
up, they are not worthy of verification of their current existence.

Chassi/comp no. 368 200 3xx
Wheel well no. 366 00064 (6 spot welds holding it on - apprentice?)
outside "finger" fuel release
two fresh air knobs on right of ashtray.
disc brakes/4stud
original key 'made in Canada"
I'm guessing CDK '68 - 1969 sale.
I think I'm the 3rd owner and pulled it out of the back of the last owners shed (case of beer)
this is how it looked when I got it back on the road. Close to how it was born (sea blue? originally) wide chrome stip, exterior below door, not
attached. Baby seat in the back looks like front bucket. And the tacky wool seat covers to cover the wear&tear.
5years later it has been "improved" to my likes greatly.
mid improvements. type 4 engine under plastic.
Tuned Type IV power - shaking out the rust.

MY68VW it would be good to see your Square back on the road again.
As for Panel Vans the first one I remember seeing was around Woodridge in Brisbane's south. It was a nice white one, I seen a few times in the early
to mid 80's. Then in the early 90's? Import Advantage was using one as a delivery vehical. I'm sure this car is well known. I always assumed this
was the same car.
I met Aaron at the VW Nationals in 93 or 94 and he told me about the Panel Vans. We only talked for a few minutes and I wish more of what he told me
sank in back then but from then on if one was in front of me I'd know what it was.
I have never seen another one in the flesh. I wish I looked harder for one back in the day because I'd like one now!

Could be 62-67, but most likely 64 or 65N ( 1500S had the deeper tail lights, which are also usually on 66 and 67's models but the early flat lenses
will fit up till 69)
If you have access to the chassis number can tell for sure

It's never been off the road for long;
Longest non running stint was while the type4 was being introduced to it, rear discs, efi & ecu and sway bars - 6mths
When the photos (April '10) were taken it was off the road for 4 weeks after destroying 4th gear. It then did 40,000km in 3mths (2000km every second
weekend)- the only hiccup was a dead alternator and scoured piston barrel. Oh, and a cracked deep sump that took months of dripping oil to
discover.
It does need some TLC, new barrel and the ecu re mapped. Yeah - the sump needs replacing too but for now gasket goo has stopped the leak.
Tuned Type IV power - shaking out the rust.

Hi everyone.
I just picked up my first VW, a '65 1500s notch.
I've been told on another forum that my car is a "1965 one year only Australian manufacture 1500S." which is pretty exciting
There are some quick pictures of it in the thread in my signature (only got it a few days ago).
What details should I post up to confirm where my car was built? I have the VIN, and number i found behind the spare wheel. I also found "M-249 90
OKTAN" on my engine, which seems to of been an option engine that allowed the owner to run regular fuel. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=389547
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Hi azzatron.
Your car is an Australian 1500 Twin S. That is the way they came in Australia. The standard model had a single carb and the twin S had the carbs from
a German 1500S. Aussie cars did not have the high comp pistons.

Hi
Lucky You to find a 1500 twin S with an M option M249 which must mean a low compression engine as the normal 1500S from Germany had High Compression
pistons etc
and needed high octane fuel....
not sure of the petrol rating of standard and super petrol back then....
where as the Aussie made ones were the Twin S....
with twin carburetors....
excellent... I'll have to look at the pics

You can usually tell the Australian type 3 halfback or notchbacks as they didn't have the large over riders as used on German 1500S models.

started at the end of July 1963. When did the CKD cars start? 1500s says 1969.
I have an as original as you get these days 1966 1600TS Fastback VW Model 312s first registed 11/66. I've read the first Australian Fastys were
April 66. My dad had an earlier one than me back in the day (Black red interior)body No.316151435. Regested 9/66. Who has the oldest?
I could show some pics of what my fasty has. Vicelores car looks to be a great example of a 67 Notch and I'm sure 1500s has a heaps of stuff he could
show us.

The TS fastback was Australian Only...
The German Fastbacks were 1600TL ... and usually were fuel injected...
VW Australasia was in trouble by the end of 1967 so, CKD type 3s would have been in 1968...
local VW trained Mechanic went thru the Clayton factory and saw Volvos - Datsun 1600 - Type 3 - type 1 - all on the production line... they also
assembled Mercedes trucks...
Not sure what year it was...

Only new at this stuff but weren't the first 2 years of Fastbacks just twin carb engines. Read somewhere that FI wasn't until 1968 even in
Germany.

I think Aussie CKD Type3's started late 68 for the 69 model year and German Type3's had carbs till 68 like Rusty said.

Well it's my first VW so it's been interesting finding out all this information about my car. They've all been pleasant surprises also which is
nice!
Would my car of been built from Australian pressed panels? I'm just amazed how little rust it has (none in panels at all and only two spots in the
rear arches), and it's not as if the car has been pampered it's whole life. I'd figure anything that has come by boat is normally more prone to
rusting?

Pretty certain the interior is different also?
Yeah, they're by no means "rare", but do seem to be uncommon. I've personally never seen any other Australian S models, but I'm looking forward
to the upcoming VW shows so I can see some other cars for inspiration.

I thought I'd revive this thread.
I got some pics of Australian 68 type3's. Please correct me if I am wrong with any of this.
This is a Aussie 68 Fastback.
It has thin side chrome and no TS badge or parking light.
Volkswagen on the deck lid.
Still has wide 5 drum brakes( this one is missing its wheel trims)
This one is Diamond Blue.
Still has the fuel filler under the bonnet.
68 is the first year for 12V.
The head light and wiper switch knobs are the safty design and now black.
Also the cigarette lighter, gear stick, widow winders have black knobs as well as a black hand brake handle.
The interior is still simular to a German 66 deluxe with the vertical pleats on the door trim , Z arm rests and all one colour.
Here is a pic of a notch.
You can see the latter type fuel gauge with the symbols on warning lights. I think that is new for 68?
Notch and Square are still two tone interior simular to the German N model.
This car has white window winder knobs and two tone gear stick knob. Is this right for 68 Notchs and Squares?

I reckon the fasty is a 67, wrap around indicators, fuel filler under the hood, air control levers on the dash, early door handles, Z arm rests.
Nothing says 68 to me.
Can't tell much from the notch pics. I notice that the quarter window has the lever style catches whereas my 68 has the ones with a round knob. That
one also has air control levers in dash. Could be 67 too?
Check the VIN numbers if it starts 317 (it's 1967), if it starts with 318 (it's 1968). I think people often believe their rego details rather than
looking at the VIN.
My car is 318 (1968) although my rego papers say 1969.

I think your car is a Very late German 68 CKD car sold in Austraila as one of the first batch of 69 model CKD cars.
These cars above are the last of the Australian built cars that were sold in 68. I think they would both have 318 chassis numbers.
