yeah because if its not braced the two rubber boots on each side of the manifold will twist a bit and they will one day split.
the old vw one has the heat pipes that go on the exhaust pipe to hold it in place. them heat pipes are rusted off in that picture of yours.

add up the cost of decent inserts & the tapered coils, then compare the difference in $$ to V-force struts which do all that & more, yes more costly but no need to upgrade in future, adjustment is far more usable in reality compared to the topline gear looking at the legs you have & the height joel has on the upper limits, just a thought to ponder over....

what happened to the idea of stock springs with stock wheel/tyre?

I want the vforce wheels. I wish I had the cash to buy that orange 1303 in melb, and then I'd be set. Sadly, that's not possible.

Will do a topline order once I get some full time work early in the new year.

thats a smart thing to do. we got our red vw cheap after a bloke spent $35000+ on the rebuilt.

yeah it is definitely the way to go. People say you will never get the money back that you spend and it is true. You are better off going with an unfinished project or something that is already done like that orange one in adelaide.

In reality, it would be smart to just scrap the famed colonel mustard 1303. But I'm far too attached to the car to let it go. I'm currently content to drive it around town when it's able and safe. My longer term goal is to get a daily car that has aircon, is better on fuel, etc (looking at golf's) that I can drive everyday, and long distances - as my work will eventually call for that. The next part of the plan, car wise is to get another 1303 or put some serious cash into restoring colonel. In a happy make believe Jason land, I'd like a daily (golf?), weekend fun driver, and a track car/registered. & car trailer.. Long term? Yes. Very. Between this I still have stuff for music to buy (guitars etc) and laptops/computers etc for work, camp organisation, youth group stuff). I'm also wanting to move out of home before the end of 2010. Yep - now you know my 5 year goals AVD.

In short I'm well attached to colonel, and I really like 1303's (why?? Becuase struts just feel right to drive, and curved screen feeels most modern. I'd love a late 50's model one day though).

So at the Moment, I'm just trying to get colonel the best I can on my budget. Full time job hunting now!

Btw. I really appreicate the advice from you chaps, Ian; Joel, Dave, steve Carter, Dave Carter. :) thanks'!!!

Just ordered my new discs. :)

Yesterday, I got my new handbrake cables in, new shoes and drums sorted. Brakes will need adjusting again soon, but they are a bit better, even though, once the fronts are sorted out, its going to be awesome in the brakes department.

At this stage, im also 99% sure I wont need a new M/C, but i will be prepared to do it if needed, its the last stage of the brake upgrade.

All the best for the new year (I know its late, but haven't chatted lately ) and hoping you are able to get your 'famed colonel mustard' back on the road properly soon.

All the best mate,

Mate, please don't think that people don't care, with Ryana89, Joel and myself, thats at least 3 people who care!

I have found that there are a few 'VW snobs' on here....the ones that think that their opinions are the only ones that count and if you're not doing things the way they would or make a comment that they dont think you should....they end up cutting you down quick smart. (PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A VERY SMALL MINORITY OF POSTERS!!).

Generally, I think you will find that 99% people are genuinely interested, even if they dont make a comment on your thread. I know I check most threads on here, but dont really post on too many. I generally post on peoples threads that have bothered to comment on mine....selfish I know

Anyway, take heart mate, knowing that there are definitely people who are interested in your build's progress and are hoping that you are back on the road ASAP enjoying that mustard bug!!

Well thankyou for the support gents.

the missing stuff...

I ended up getting the calipers painted red. without taking ages to detail them, im happy with the result. I figue, by the time i get wheels where you can see the caliper, it will be time for a pad change and a repainting of the calipers.

about 2 weeks ago I got my new (well second hand) drums and New (thanks dave/stidub) shoes on, also have a handbrake again.

http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu341/jason_aniolkowski/IMG_73351.jpg

and then a few days later, I took a trip to the sunny coast. had very few issues, just started noticing front end noises (tie rods/balljoints) and the 70km/h shimmy. made it home fine, travelled about 300km's, max speed 120km/h. Know i know why some of the guys rave about kamei's - if they do what they say they do, I need one!

Here's some shots from the trip - (the shretchy strap was a "just in case" I had ALOT of stuff in there....) I was able to pack a 2 x 12 100watt amp behind the rear seat, 2 guitars on the rear seat, and 2 peoples luggage for a week long camp, alot of music books, stuff to repair the car and a passenger..... it was a full car!

Site was powered up via diesel, 20A at 240V 3-phase. We ran three to four 1500W spotlights as well as the sounds, just to put a decent load on the generator as it was still being run in!
