my love of VW motors will never die
hell, ive been building them since i was 15, my brain still ticks over conrod bolt torque values and head tension patterns etc when i try to sleep at
night
but i am truely happy with the end result of the converstion to though. in the next few years another VW will probably join the stable again and stay
mecjhanically stock
how else am i supposed to make use of all these parts i got laying around
i'll get some vids up soon but from inside the car u would swear its just a big VW engine running IDAs
thats exactly what it sounds like
back on topic
it seems i have some territorial marking going on.....
And it aint coming from the engine
J'ACCUSE.......... INPUT SHAFT!
original looking abit raped after removal
bore cleaned out ready for new seal
OEM german parts all the way baby
to tap it home squarely an old axle nut and some of the staino pipe i seem to have an abundance of at the moment
new shaft installed with a dab of permatex on the outside and well oiled on the sealing lip with fresh tranny oil
No more leaks

i got introduced to exedy button clutches a few years back when i was part of the the toyota world when i had the celica and corolla
id always gone the token kennedy in the past but at the time there was a stage1 famine on
couldnt get one anywhere
autobahn had the exedy clutch in overnight
not badly priced either
200mm type1 is the only HD air cooled clutch they do

i was thinking of trying the exedy cushion button next time i get a clutch
just dont like HD clutches that just about dislocate your hip to operate

she would have just about forgotten what mildred looks like
so....
Who ordered the caramel milkshake?
a direct result of my stupidity, it highlights the importance of the cooling system with these engines
the only weakness with these engines....and there it is
after i stuck the engine back in the other day from replacing the shaft seal i just poured what coolant i drained back in but was still a bit short
one mainstreamer was parked in and the other was down at byron for the day
so i took the bug down to autobahn to ggrab some more coolant
it didnt seem that low and didnt get hot on the trip but next morning i got 2.5L of cooant into it
since then its still running perfectly fine but ive noticed the overflow fills up more than usual and if its just idling the fan stays on alot longer
than normal
just gotta decide now whether i can be arsed pulling it down to do the headgaksets or just swap it for another engine
ill probably just fix this one up as i know the history of it and even with a leaking headgasket its still running like clockwork
i was actually in shock when i found out cos its running to well so it must only be the tinyest leak that opens up when its hot
ive put over 100kms on it and didnt even notice anything was wrong till i saw under the oil cap
ill proabably do the timing belt, waterpump, 'stat and cam seals at the same time
im getting abit sentimentally attached to this engine so id rather stick with the devil i know

Hi Joel
That's bad luck, they were probably on the way out, the extra heat just tipped them over. You need to fix it, otherwise your going to reluctant to
drive it on trip.

Hi Joel
Iam about to but a EJ22 motor in my super beetle and I was wondering if you could help me answer some questions.
Is the Kafer brace the only thing needed to hold the engine probably in place? ( http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/66glook/Floorpan077.jpg )
How much HP can you run through the original transmission?
What kind of suspension and brakes are you using?
Thanks, Bragi |

Your probably right Steve.
it wont even be run again now till i get it sorted, the only reason it has been is i was blissfully unaware of the problem.
im really not too upset over it, pissed off at myself for letting it happen but its not a hard fix, the headgaskets are something i should have done
the in the first place
to much of a rush to get it on the road
Hi Bragi, you'll love it
a kafer brace is the only strenghtening required. you could get away without one but the risk of the chassis forks bending or fatigue cracking is
there
they're not hard to install and you can really notice the way it strenghtens up the rear of the car
the standard trans will take the power of a stock EJ22 if your not permanantly driving like a race car
its a bit of a piece of string question you can damage a tranny with a stock vw engine if your rough enough or driven fairly sensibly would last even
with an ej20turbo
at present im running 4 wheel discs which were on the car before the conversion
bigger rear torsion bars are a good idea but that said im not running them, now that ive raised the back up a bit its riding perfectly fine
an EJ22 is only putting out about 20 or so more HP than most 1916 vw engines people put in and very few of them bother upgrading transmissions or
brakes

Don't use "mechanic in a bottle" tsk, tsk
Do it properly, it's not difficult, just a PITA as you'll have to pull the motor.
Don't forget you'll need inlet & exhaust gaskets too

Nice work Joel, this has really come around mate. Been seeing it grow since day one of this thread
hmm... vrs sets sounds like a bit of effort. It will run like a dream after...
The liquid glass (with hte copper flake) Chemiweld i think its called, is a good permanent fix. They even recommend for new engines to seal any
factory pin holes. And it works. I was a bit 'reluctant' as i was worried about coating everything and making a mess inside the block. But it only
'collagulates' where the loss of pressure is, so it doesn't deposit everywhere. It simply seals the leak after driving 30 mins minium. Then you
drain water, flush, fill with fresh coolant.
If i remember right though, I been told thta when the leaks in the oil you can't use the chemiweld stuff. Can't confirm though... but i would
imagine it ain't healthy.
You'd konw more about this than me anyways with your watercooled background. I'm just going from the experience on my celica 2 months ago :P, and
took an old mechanics advice (friend of mine) when i was having head gasket issues. its since been sealed, regardless of the torment i put my car
through.

im just hoping the thread helps people that are in the situation i was facing 9 months ago, considering the conversion but not sure of exactly whats
involved
its under $100 for a pair of genuine head gaskets
im not a fan of temporary fixes plus its a good excuse to give the top end a freshen up
my old boss will skim the heads for me if they need it which i highly doubt but you never know
