Personly I couldn't give a shit, but don't kid yourselves, even if you have an after market steering wheel you can be defected.

This debate could go on for ever.

I also heard someone got defected for not having enough washer fluid in the bottle .
You could get defected for anything . Lights not set correctly , there has even been some Golf owners with R32's that have been defected for noise . What the gene berg trophy was about was building a tough street car . Not putting plates on a race car .

Wayne your turbo beetle is an awesome vehicle and a credit to you.
Bug racer, when someone has had everything complianced during the build then it is a registered, air cooled, fast and therefor ticks the boxes.
When debate about classes lessens peoples desire to build a fast car and run it, then I think that is a real stuff up. My 2c. It is about racing and enjoying it, and appreciating what other people have achieved also. ;)

I agree.
Wayne was obviously jipped when it comes to the Berg Trophy, I know of another that won it and never was oficially recognised way back....so don't put so much weight on it guy's....maybe after all this washes out, a new street car trophy can be developed. After sorting some rules of course......maybe there is no end to this.......

Thanks Wayne for admitting my car is quicker, and it was only a 2233cc engine!!!
You surprise me though Wayne, seeing as I am the reason you car went quick. Have you forgotten that you were struggling with the tune up and was looking at the colour of tail pipe richening it up. But because you were on C16 I told you that I would lean it off and that you were misreading the C16. Then you elected to listen to me and went your fastest pass the very next run.
Those street tyres you have are not radials, they are slicks with grooves in them, not much difference.
Mine also has full glass working window, lights, indicators, roof liner, carpets, alternator and belt on, steel panels but mine is an animal on the street.
I never once claimed it was a daily driver but the topic it Fastest Street Registered
Air Cooled VW. I don't understand why you went there Wayne seeing as I have never said a bad word about you or your car and thought you were above this.

Holy. Crap.

I posted this question eight years ago and its still an active thread, and still causing arguments around the place. I almost feel guilty !

Amazing how things have come along in the Aus scene in the last five years since I have been active on this forum, just incredible.

Please keep building awesome cars, running fast, safe times and most of all enjoying your dak dak above all else.

Peace out.

no exposed front mount coolers.
no turbos hanging out of the bonnet or bootlid.
only plumbed back wastegates.
but there is always loop holes in all rules.

That probably sums up what Id like , fibreglass guards dont bother me , same with interior . Basically whatever you can pull off the car in an hour to race it should be legit .

Wayne and Nick . Your cars are so so close to each other in terms of time that the difference between who is fastest could even be as simple as who goes to the toilet before the run and who goes after ! There is like not even a bumper difference between the cars !! Two definately unique cars ! Two very talented builders , and Id love to see you race side by side :borg:

I guess Troy's Type 3 would fit into the rules listed above.

full interior, bumpers, lights, wipers, all steel, engien lid is on and turbo is plumbed back!!

what to remove in a hour though.......

Can't wait for the next trip to the dyno though!! Should be interesting......

Thanks for thinking of me matty,I've got a 8.20 time card some where,And loco 66 and me had another 13.0 100+mph daily driver bug racer wouldn't like it tho! 1600 to4 just a dump pipe no muffler as such but a turbo is a muffling device according to mechanial engineers,45mm side draught hanginging out the boot lid!Home made nitrous kit dunlop g grids 130 octane high lead pump gas(Got it from the same pump they used to fill up the hawker sea fury ww2 fighter)Like all the cars me and luke have had they were are daily drivers, most people wouldn't say they are streeters but we never saw any faster true daily drivers. These cars were never built with the goal of australias fastest vw street car they were built to make myself and lukey smile, and i'm still smiling now thinking about making our own nitrous kit for lukes "SHIT FIGHTER"and some of our other adventures, thats what its all about mates having fun thrashing to make races days with out sleep borrowing parts doing what you have to do to race!

my car ran a 12.1 before it's last incantation on street rego.with street tyres on the rear.but wasn't steel bodied, but it was only driven 5k's to and from work.
i class a street car differently to others though.nicks is still a street car to me.it depends on what your interpretation of street car.
this post was a massive dickpulling comp if you ask me.
as long as they are quick, and driven with rego who cares.
arron's kombi rocks it up.

Just bumping this up after near 2 years since last post . Watercooled cars are now easily being made to run 12 second passes with many into the 11 second zone all daily driven .
Its going to be harder to judge with air-cooled cars as who is a true street car given not many people still daily air-cooled cars and most are towed to and from events .
The Gene Berg trophy for air-cooled cars is well and truly outdated now in the 21 Century although there should be an equivalent for water-cooled cars as more and more get built .
