been a while since I posted so thought it about time for an update. Following the major rebuild in 2014 the car performed really well though out 2015
with outings at lakeside, Leyburn Sprints Noosa Hillclimb and off course Warwick drags. Had to do almost no maintenance on it all year which was the
reason for going with the Subi to start with. Seems we have sorted out most of the power plant issues. Now to chase handling....
So, some baselines worth posting;
my very first outing in the car was Warwick drags in 2011 so will start here;
2011 ET 9.94 64.2mph twin turbo issues
2012 ET 9.836 66.6 mph still chasing second turbo
2013 ET 8.995 81.4mph finally sorted second turbo!
2014 ET 8.544 84.96mph after major rebuild
2015 8.464 88.67mph change to 105octane fuel
so continuous improvement...
next was lakeside times
2011 - 2012 we were chasing the twin turbo problems so didn't post any times
2013 Jan 1.16.2
2013 Apr 1.14.1
2013 Sept 1.10.36
2014 Mar 1.10.4 and then in May at Wakefield spun a bearing
2014 nov 1.07.48
2015 feb 1.07.01
2015 jul 1.06.2
2015 Leyburn sprints 2nd in 3.5 to 5l class 56.271sec
2015 Noosa Hill 4th in sport sedan class 70.62sec
now it is worth mentioning that for all this time I have run tyres purchased second hand at time of building the car in 2011! 205 60 15 on the rear
and 195 50 15 on the front.
Needless to say the tyres are well past due by dates!!!
So what is in store for 2016??
Chasing a sub minute lap at lakeside, 1.14 at Wakefield, 0.53 Leyburn, noosa 0.65 and warwick break the 90mph mark
So there you have it, goals for 2016!!
Currently I am doing the following upgrades;
front steering arms bent for more caber aiming for -4deg
rear suspension arms changing to 944 alloy arms with camber and toe adjustment aiming for 2 deg neg camber
front brakes Porsche 996 rear calipers Boxter vent discs
rear brakes porsche 964 calipers and 944 vent discs
front wheels will now be 16" x 8' running 215 50 16
rears are 16" x 9" running 245 50 16, and yes they will be brand new!!
while we are at it we are also doing a timing belt and idler change.
Hope to have it all done by end of Feb so we can do some tests at Lakeside before the trip to Wakefield.

progress update.
Front:
top arms are at Vintage getting bent as my 12 tonne press wasn't up to the job and I didn't want to take my jig to the local engineering shop.
These should be back soon so I can get the front end back together.
The 944 alloy hubs are being machined to my specs to suit the Beetle bearings and seal. I ended up using a nissan patrol front disc and it is an
almost perfect fit. I will post photos soon. The front hubs will give me plus 13mm extra width each side and with the new 8" wheels that should be
just about right for the 4 deg camber I will run.
Rear.
the 944 alloy hubs are now completely apart and new bearings about to go in. Once that is done I'll fit it to the car and see where the hub finishes
up to determine what wheel spacer I am going to need to fit the 9" rims.....

Porsche use Lm67048/010 and LM11949/10 which is same as holden set but the VW is L45449/10 and LM11749 which are smaller in the ID so the Porsche
bearing would be loose on the spindle. It's not practical to make a new spindle so best option is to make up cup spacers. Did you use the 944
spindle? I think they are an easy swap on McP fronts but not on BJ fronts.
We machined the front hubs yesterday and they came up really good. Now to finish drilling and threading the discs and make up the spacers. Should be
ready by the weekend and right to go back on the car....

Very interested in this.
Those tires should be your first port of call. I shaved almost 7 seconds off my lakeside time with decent semi slicks ( not a volksie, but the point
stil stands) and even they go off after 12 months. tires tires tires before any of the rest. in saying that you are a long way off sub 60sec at
lakeside, that next 12 is going to be hell and the speed difference in the car will be awesome! good luck

hi Boozo, yep I know tires will give me a big hit. I'm not that far off sub 60 as I am doing 66's now so even with what you say tires alone will
put me in the 60 sec bracket. Problem I have at lakeside, and QR for that matter is that generally sprints are 5 or 6 laps. lap 1 is warm up 2 and 3
are my hot laps and then 4 and 5 and 6 are scary as the brakes are faded and I need to break way early into carousel and hungry.
last time I was at lakeside I was almost running up the back of people at carousel as I just couldn't pull it up after lap 4.... Bit like Ken
Bartlett in the old Camaro at bathurst back in the day....

okay so here are some photos of the front brake set up.
The first is the 944 hub which has had the back face spigot machined down from the 107mm to 103mm to suit the Nissan patrol disc.
I did this so that I can change discs if need be without having to modify the disc more than necessary.
the second shot is the dog bone adaptor to fit the Porsche brakes and the third photo is the porsche 4 pot caliper.

here are the Nissan discs. They are a near perfect fit for this application. I think from memory they are 294mm OD and 22mm thick. They are
ventilated and I went solid rather than drilled etc cause I am after braking not looks!
As can be seen in the third photo the dummy fit looks really good and I made up a scaled drawing to work out the spacer sizes etc. I know a few VW
suppliers around the world do spacer sets for the 944 to VW spindle bearings but I wanted to approach it a slightly different way.

more photos!
these show the bolt holes in the discs filled as they are 6 hole were as the 944 hub is 5 hole so we needed to drill and tap into one of the 6 holes.
These have now ben done but I didn't have any photos at time of posting.
The last 3 photos are the spacers we made for the hubs and then press fitted to the hubs.
My time at Timken really helped work out the sizes and ensure a good fit.
We machined the first hub on monday evening and it went together like a clock!
I'll post some more pictures next week as we start to put the hubs and discs / calipers together.
