I know you can fit these with the motor and box in place, but how hard is it to do that?

If anyone is wondering, Yes they can fit type 3 providing that you bore a large hole right through the shock tower in place of the shocker bolt hole and weld in a very thick crush tube and use longer bolts replacing the bolts that come with the kit. Then it will work and mount the same way as intended for bug.

I have used studs to test fit these but will go for the crush tube and through bolt setup for strength and rigidity.

I don't know, I am not even considering the type 3 engine to power mine so its not an issue.

I am guessing it would be a tight fit with the heat exchangers.
