Been a while since i have posted, in between preparing my house for sale, reapplying for my existing role at work and selling off my N scale model
railroading collection there hasn't been much time for Rosie. I did however take her for a drive yesterday and have a rego inspection. I have now all
the parts for the engine build other than the new exhaust which i will purchase next month. This week I will call mike Kristen of custom bugs and
buses to discuss time frames and process for the new engine build.

The engine is almost ready to be installed, Boris and the boys and Vintage VW have done an excellent job
Rosie will go in for the engine as well as installation of Tacho, Oil pressure and temperature and head temperature as well as new fuel line, brake
line, accelerator and clutch cables plus a few other bits and pieces.
Sold the existing engine already which was a bouns

Last Saturday I dropped Rosie into Vintage VW for the engine replacement as well as the following works
1. Replace firewall
2. Replace accelerator, clutch cables
3. Replace engine and transaxle mounts with OEM mounts
4. Replace gear shift with CSP, selector forks, couplings
5. Install oil pressure, oil temp and head temp gauges in glove box
6. Install tacho under dash forward of gear shift
7. Mount fire extinguisher on passenger pillar
8. Install fuel solenoid cutoff
7. New rubbers in head light reflectors and halogen lamps
8. Repair heater box levers
9. Replace fuel line
The engine will have a vintage speed exhaust fitted as well, all in all should be back home in a few weeks

Thanks Robb nothing really in terms of shiny bits all the good stuff is within the engine my plan was always for a good solid engine with low down
torque. Boris took me for a drive and it so smoothe like a factory engine yet plenty of power when you need it

lots of car show to drive to , we have vw warwick coming up, Valla , You could even take it for a run to watch the drags next weekend at wsid, I think
vintage , cbb and a few other vw wil be racing in that round.

Thanks Rick actually Boris told me since the car has been there he has received so many positive comments about it.
Rod Penrose did the interior although he was a little concerned when I selected the colour however he admitted afterwards how good it turned out

Car is almost complete, had a minor setback where there is a what we thought a fuel smell in the car however the tank has been checked , new fuel line
run and all new in the engine bay so its a bit of a mystery. The car always had a bit of a smell in it and im wondering whether the previous owner
when he repaired the pan sealed the car with a petroleum based product? Boris also suggested the smell could be coming from the vinyl?

Well brought the car home with no fuel smell, the fuel line was replaced in the tunnel but no sign of leak.
Car goes great although i will need to replace the deck lid, with the stand off on and doing 100km the oil temp rose too 115C which is a little high
considering today was only 24 degrees. driving locally it sat on around 100C. Oil pressure was around 40psi and head temp around 350F.
Obviously the motor is tight but has lots of low down torque as i imagined. Only real issue is really bad noise interference on the sound system.
Looks like i need to research whats the best noise suppression for the Mallory Dizzy.
The boys at vintage have done a fantastic job and i highly recommend them.
On Saturday i will be washing then clay barring the car then waxing

ok looks like noise suppression will be solved, I checked the mallory site and it specifically notes not to use copper leads so i will change them out
on the weekend

Hi Paul,
Congratulations on the new lease of life and well done to VVD for their role.
You mention changing deck lid and stand offs, Why? Is it because of the extra heat you mentioned?
Not sure why, but my motor is larger capacity than yours and my 61 deck lid has no vents or stand offs and temps are fine.
So why the changes?

you will need to check a few things first
Jetting of the carbs and timing
Is the gauge reading right
Can you hold the dip stick
115C on a mild day at 100 is not right

yes that seems a little strange, here is what i posted on the samba
Picked up my brand new 1776 today driving down the freeway i noticed the following at 100km (65mph) the oil temp rose too 115C (240F) which is a
little high considering today was only 24c degrees (75F). driving locally it sat on around 100C (212F). Oil pressure was around 40psi and head temp
around 350F.
I have the original deck lid with no vents but had a stand off at the bottom of the lid.
Considering Sydney is in winter and our summer temps regularly go for 40C or (110F) not that i will be driving in the heat, should i consider either
or both options
1. New deck lid with 4 vents
2. External oil cooler, engine has external oil filter installed
It could be purely because the engine is new maybe? I am going to continue to monitor before i definitely go ahead however i would prefer a new deck
lid and remove the stand off

thanks yes Boris was a little concerned as well, it could be the gauges are affected by the wrong leads and being interfered with
but highly unlikely.
What is the normal operating range for a aircooled engine? 90 to 100?
Head temperature is running at 350F

you should of had temp gauge on old motor to get cross reference.
our cars ran at about 90 on the way to sawtell last weekend
and about 120 summer time going to VW Warwick. hood jacks drop temp 20.

Could it also be that the engine is brand new and still tight that could be running a bit hotter? when i got off the freeway it dropped to about 100C

Paul, the motor shouldn't be running that hot. I'd suggest you get the tune checked out.
350 head temps indicates you're running lean IMO........this will create heat.
What cam/comp/heads/carbs are you running ?
