Bummer!!
But don't stop now!! You are some of the few talented guys that can still get this bug fixed up and to the track in time.

Last minute engine repairs for Ben Ford

well after about 15 runs on the dyno making small adjustments , Bens bug was making just over 300hp @ the wheels with A/F ratio of 5.0 , when suddenly
it erupted in a ball of fire . This occured at 4pm wednesday afternoon . Ben was devastated after spending so much time and money on his car over the
past 4 months preparing it for Warwick .
I arrived back at WPVW with Bens bug at approx. 5pm and Ben immediately proceeded to drain the fuel system to get all of the methanol out as he
thought it was all over . While he was doing this I made a few calls to assess what we could do to get it running .
At 5.15pm Bens bug goes up onto the hoist and head removed for inspection . We dont quite know why , but no.2 barrel has split at the top ( running
down the bore approx 15mm) , this has caused the seal between the head and barrel to be disturbed , torching the copper head gasket , torching the
head and one headstud . Not too much damage considering the size of the explosion . The head has been left with a very large hole in it but there is
no damage to the pistons or rings . The cylinder head is stripped for inspection and welding .
Our 1st issue is that we dont have any spare long barrels in 94mm . Ben makes a few calls to a few VW’ers locally while I search through my stock of
2nd hand barrels looking for a barrel that is worn enough to give us the correct skirt to cylinder wall clearance . I find 2 standard length barrels
and 1 new racewear headstud . The headnut gets stolen from my oval .
I spend 2 1/2 hours at a local engineers shop after catching him locking his shop to go home for dinner . He die-grinded the head and welded it up for
us . He then machined up a support for the 94mm barrel to enable him to hold it in his lathe to be machined . I got him to machine 3mm from the barrel
seating face of the 1st barrel to make the spigot into the case 3mm longer . This will support the piston better at BDC . I then get him to reface the
top sealing face of the barrel to ensure it is perfectly true . The 2nd barrel is then placed into the lathe and the top sealing face is also refaced
to ensure correct seal . We then measure the original barrel overall length from seating face to top sealing face , and find that the first barrel we
have machined is 4mm too short (this was to be expected) . We now machine from the top of the 2nd barrel a 4mm thick spacer ring which is used as a
barrel spacer at the top of the 1st barrel to gain the overall correct length for Bens engine .
I have calculated that the join in the barrel will be down the side of the piston , but the piston rings do not reach the join . This will work OK as
the combustion explosion when ignited will not be directly at the join of the barrel . Well that is all we can do for now to get Ben to the track .
Back to WPVW , I redrill the headstud hole in the cylinder head where it has been welded , reface both the chambers in the head to ensure a perfect
seal , hone the barrel to give the cylinder wall a good clean . All parts are washed , the head is reassembled and the engine is assembled back
together with new copper head gaskets .
Bens engine is fired-up at 2am Thursday morning (just 10 hours after the engine explosion) and all sounds good . A couple of degrees ignition timing
is taken out of the engine to ensure that there will be no detonation and it is ready to race .
The car transporter arrives at WPVW to collect our team cars at 5pm Thursday afternoon whilst Bens bug is still on the hoist with no doors , no front
end and no engine lid , and I am still manufacturing the parachute mountings . At 5.30pm his bug is assembled and washed and at 5.45pm Ben drives
his bug onto the transporter for the trip to Warwick .

WPVW Ben Ford race report
Bens 1st run at Warwick was tidy and straight , but we detected clutch slip with the new RLR rev-6 clutch assembly and his rear tyres were hitting up
under the guards as the bug had much more squat than before .
We disassemble his rear suspension and reset the rear torsion bars 25mm higher . We send Ben out for a 2nd run to assess the clutch . The clutch
assembly appeared to hook-up in the skid using 3rd gear . The rear wheels are not hitting under the guards , but excessive clutch slip is detected on
the run .
We bring Bens bug into the scrutineering shed at approx. 6pm , remove the wheelie bars and rear bodywork , then in front of a large crowd proceed to
remove the engine to check and adjust the shimming on the clutch assembly .
There are 7x .006” shims under each clutch mounting post . I remove 2x .006” shims from under each post to give the clutch more clamping pressure
. The engine is re-installed , bodywork and wheelie-bars fitted and Ben drives his bug from the shed in just 35mins ….. We still had time to wash-up
before dinner at 7pm .
1st run Sunday morning , Ben launches his bug a bit harder and the clutch appears to hook-up and drives out of the hole much better . But now with the
extra drive and squat , the rear tyres are now hitting under the guards again .
Back into the shed , we disassemble the rear suspension once again , lifting the rear another 20mm on the torsion bars . Bens bug now sits 45mm higher
in the rear than when it was last raced .
Bens 2nd and 3rd runs on Sunday were not so good as Ben could not quite come to grips with my Berg shifter that I had loaned him for the weekend
(nothing wrong with shifter) , missing several gear changes and clutch slip starting to re-appear . After his 3rd run I took my Berg shifter from his
bug and put it in the sports sedan for Humpty to use . Should have seen the look on Simons face when I removed his gearshifter whilst in the staging
lanes with only 8 cars to go before running . Simon did not have any issues with the shifter , so we will blame Ben !!
I installed Bens own empi shifter to his bug and on his last run he did not miss any gears , however excessive clutch slip had emerged …. We need to
do a little homework with Bens new RLR rev-6 dual disc assembly and when we get the settings correct I feel confident that he will go very quick .
Bens best time for the weekend was 6.99@99mph which put him in the top 10 cars
Lucky for Ben , I was not racing this year and all of the other WPVW cars performed faultlessly , otherwise we may not have had the time to keep him
on the track with all of the pit maintenance , as we did .....

Over the past couple of weeks we at WPVW have been spending quite a lot of time on Bens supercharged bug in preparation for the Nostalgia Drags at
WSID .
A new set of barrels was ordered and machined to length , installed and all looks great with Bens' engine . A new 65 tooth crank pulley was installed
and the 52tooth pulley removed , a new tensioner pulley was fabricated and a couple of new blower belts were purchased to suit .
The blower overdrive was risen from 20% up to 50% and it made a huge difference to the attitude of the engine .
