Long term project - Bug type 4 turbo

Over time I've gathered a bunch of parts.. so I think it's about time to start with my long term project.

Now here's the plan:
1971 VW Beetle (that I've already got as a donor)

It will be dropped to the floor, riding on a set of 15" fuchs with 911 discs. Raised transmission and adjustable front end with pie cut chassis for plenty caster.
Caged interior with two race seats. Only the bare minimum bits to keep weight down.

The power plant is a type 4 big cc engine (that I've already got)
- Cu engine casing
- 80mm stroker scat crankshaft
- Carillo H-beam rods
- Web 86b camshaft
- Scat lifters with oil hole
- Cromoly pushrods
- Magirus Deutz sleeves
- 103mm forged flat top pistons
- CU cylinder heads that's been opened with 45mm and 42mm valves
- 12:1 compression
- Intake plenum setup with 75mm throttle body, Methanol injection
- Garrett gt35 turbo (that I still need to buy), Changed to twin toyota turbos
- Xcell 38mm waste gate
- Xcell dump valve

The gearbox I still need to look at... It def needs a solid spool diff as I want to attempt drifting this baby.

The firewall was removed to make space for the intake system and charge cooler. Next step in the process is to build the exhaust manifolds

I've started with the intake system some time ago. The intake manifolds will house 8 injectors in total. One set of 680cc and one set of 875cc that will be staged as the boost comes in

I've got another fan shroud that we will be using, this one was only to check for clearance. The other shroud is similar to the DTM housing.

Intake looks good.

What sort of boost are you planning on running?

About 7psi. The engine is high compression, with little boost it should react pretty good.

hi Louis, I am fabo's friend that comes from south africa.
I Have been racing Type 4 engines for a long time (turbo and N/A).
Sounds like a nice project that u have there.
Is the other fan shroud that you have one of Armant's kits (IMPI)
I have one of his kits on my Turbo engine, Works great, fits great and looks almost stock.
I have a Porsche shroud on my N/A engine.
Have fun with your newest project....
Cheers, Hermann.

hi fish26.
my turbo engine has always been almost all genuine vw parts, (stock 71mm crank, stock polished rods, 1mm oversize KS pistons, reground cam, with solid lifters, stock ally pushrods, roundport heads, ported and 44 x 38mm valves (fron a old nissan skiline), everything balanced, 6,8:1 comp, chev valve springs, vw 2.1 waser boxer ignition (locked at 24), garrett T4 turbo, boosted to 28psi, 750 holly draw through, and thats about it.
But i have now upgraded my pistons to some lighter 95mm toyota pistons and my rods to some H-beam forged ones. still to take it out with the new combo, but feels much smoother and responds much faster with the lighter parts. Also using my old 48mm dellorto side draught and lower boost, till i got it sorted out and need more power.
Cheers Hermann.
PS: my NA engine is much more expensive. it wes origenaly built by FAT, has a 914 case and heads, a scat 80mm forged crank, carillo special order rods, 104mm JE pistons, 48 x 40mm valves and a 290 deg cam with chev springs and a 48mm merged exhaust, induction is now 48 IDFs. ignition is also 2.1 waser boxer.

yes, hahaha, that was me, having some fun with the turbo engine. (it had a bit of a missfire that day, as the cam had started to destroy it self and one lifter.
That IMPI shroud is a very nice system, is Armand still making them?
Has he ever explained to you, (or showed you) what goes into making that shroud?
Definitely not just an empty shroud.....
Cheers Hermann.

I think Armand is still making them, he gave me one of his older design shrouds without the oil cooler take off. It's a piece of art inside, I'm sure it takes a couple of hours to make.

This shroud sounds interesting, I like alternatives with a bit of lateral thinking.

Does this bloke have a website, or are do you blokes know of any info? I live about 300km north of you Hermann (if you're still in WH?), so if there are other ways of cooling these little things down in the heat you are no doubt aware of, then it's good to know about as a possible option.

Looking forward to the T4 build-up.

wow, 300km north of WH.... there is not much up there...hahaha:D
I'm living in Perth now. The impi cooling system works really well and looks almost like a 36hp shroud.
I don't know if anything will cool well in the heat that you have up there, but a type 4 has much more cooling fins, so it is possable to cool a type 4 with 100+ hp, much easier than a type 1 with the same power....
cheers, Hermann.

Your n/a engine sounds very similar to mine. 104.7x86, 914 heads 48x40, 48idf's, webcam f86, 10.5:1 comp making 245 hp at the flywheel and 240 ft lbs torque.

Hi Brennden.
Your comp is a bit higher than mine and the webcam 86a, b and c is a bit wilder than mine, Do you know which of the 3 webcam grinds you have?
That and the extra stroke would be the reason why your engine makes about 45 hp more than mine.
Is your engine in a beetle? must be a real beast with all that torque. what is your rev limit, or at what rpm do you make your max power?
Cheers, Hermann.
Ps: sorry 4AGE, for hijacking your thread....

Think it's an 86c. Engine is going into my 76 bus. It's a FAT performance engine that I am getting freighted from the states. Should be here early next year jan/feb. limiter is set at 6200rpm. Still waiting for all dyno sheets and specs to come as well.

Sorry for the hijack! Looking forward to seeing

The exhaust system is coming on slowly. Believe me it's real difficult to fit 48mm pipes past the pushrod tubes
