My Youtube subscribers already know what its about but long story short for those that don't, I have 2 unknown mystery very rusty, crusty and
dilapidated looking VW engines sitting in the back of the shed.
Just want to see how many veedubbers reckon they will still run.
I bought it all as a job lot from a bloke near me, he owned a home made zero turn mower that was VW powered and wanted to fit a Diesel engine.
In the 5 years he owned it he had never run the engine but the previous owner and builder said it ran fine, it also had a spare engine but was
untested and hadn't run in the 10 years since the original builder picked it up.
I only wanted the gearbox so didn't care too much about the engines but some mates want them for cores to rebuild.
When I said they are rusty and crusty I am not kidding.
a decade by the coast has not been kind to them
The one in the mower I am fairly confident will run.
It turns by hand with excellent compression, case looks nice and clean down the oil filler and when I popped the rocker covers off it has a pair of
reco heads still with assembly grease and spotless oil.
This one I'm not as hopeful with
It has sat for 10 years by the beach with no air cleaner, no distributor and one spark plug out, none were covered either I just did that as it looked
like rain on the trip home.
I also found it was missing all the right hand side push rods and 2 of the plugs are siezed into the heads.
But it turns over so who knows.
But cast your votes and I'll make some vids soon of the results

Don't worry too much about the seized plugs, missing pushrods and hell, even a dizzy. All it needs a new chrome oil filler cap and it will go better
than the day it was born

First question is obvious, do they still turn over?
Second question, have the cylinders got good compression/any compression?
Third question, do they have spark and fuel?
If the above three questions are answered with a yes, check the timing.
Fourth and last question, do you have a fire extinguisher handy?
My gut feeling on the spare Beetle engine is even if it does run it wont be well.
good engines don't tend to sit for 10 years with one plug missing, another 2 stripped and all the openings left open for the mud wasps to get
into.
Seb, they both turn over by hand fine.
The Kombi motor out of the mower actually has really good compression.
Here's the intro vid for anyone who hasn't caught it yet

Ok well that's enough suspense, thanks to all those who voted.
I've actually had the results for a while.
My mate that is picking them is about as reliable as an Alfa Romeo and was supposed to pick them up last Sat so I got in early just in case.
but a week later they are still sitting in the shed.
The Kombi motor was a pretty well a guaranteed runner but curiousity got the better of me, I wanted to suss out the Beetle motor first.
It had a lot of things wrong with it and I reckon it would be a miracle if it ran after 10 years sitting with all those faults.
but it was also the most complete and only needed a dissy and the RHS pushrods, where as the kombi motor needed a muffler system and some oil cooler
hose hooked up.
I grabbed the pushrods out of the kombi motor, chucked a 009 on the bug motor and kicked it in the guts.
*** for those that don't want to sit through my rambling and skip straight to the punchline, jump the video ahead to the 9:00
mark***
And the Kombi motor, I dug up some old heaterboxes, a header and some left over heater hose from the bug.
*** Again, for those that don't want to sit through my rambling skip ahead to the 6:00 mark***

Well done! when they say these motors are bullet proof they really mean it! it's amazing the 10yr old motor started so easily. did you put any oil in
it?

The oil level was pretty good in both of them.
I was expecting the bug motor to start knocking or launch a spark plug out the side which was why I didn't stand too close but instead it just sat
there ticking over like a Swiss watch.
I was quite shocked to say the least.
The kombi motor was abit cranky but not surprising given I left the vac port unplugged and with the humidity on the day the intake was sweating like a
fatman with no preheat.
