Silicon/rtv/permatex does it have a place in an engine?
I'm about to start putting my 2 litre back together and there seems to be a lot of disagreement on this subject. To some people it is evil and to
others a necessary part of any engine rebuild. I'd like to hear everybody's thoughts and experience.

I use an RTV sealant on the barrel base, no where else. The main problem with the product is it spews into the inside of the join and little bits can
get into the oil system.

High temp RTV for exhaust gaskets, i also use loctite 518 to join the case halves and loctite grey under the barrels.

What about around pushrod tubes and under the head stud washers. I have a couple of engines on my bench that both have silicon in these places, one
very carefully and neatly the other not so. Is it a good idea to use silicon in these spot or should it be unnessecary.

You do not need any silicon on the push rod tubes, i use the loctite grey under the four head stud flat washers and make sure that there is no excess,
always clean it off so it is under the washer only.

I use permatex on the case halves and pushrod seals. The seals is just a precaution as you can never tell how good the seals are gonna be these days.

Buy the german one's and put them on dry, if they are silicon the sealant will not stick to them anyway, remember they are under compression.

The ones I got from Mick's sure weren't German hence using a bit of sealant to help
next time when I have more time to source parts I'll make sure they're German

Hmm, I'm noting a spot of sarcasm there
I've given up finding an Oz vendor for German quality gear at reasonable prices tho mainly the quality thing so make use of the euro exchange rate at
present

I stock them, how many do you want?
There are also more than 1 German Elring kit available, the cheap $14 version from O/S won't have everything in it.

I presently have around $20 000 worth of stock, too much to list but ranging from pretty well all air-cooled service parts to a big range of Weber
jets to that hard to find type 4 rubber dipstick boot or Berg performance gear....... Obviously not everything German but best quality available.

my way........
hone the pushrod tube seal mating surface, good quality seals and on dry, I like the aluminium sprung tubes the likes of JayCee, Scat.......ones with
the double o-ring
Permatex Aviation for a lot of machined surfaces
If you are going to use RTV please use sparingly
bitten by the bug..........several times
