Engine numbers and new cases

Hi Guys,

I was justpondering what happens when you go to get you car registered and you are using a new case which doesnt have an engine number on it.

Is it as straight forward as being given a number to stamp on it?

Cheers

Newt

depends on the state, i think nsw is you apply for a new one and then stamp it on. might be some other paper work involved as well.
check with your local transport department

In NSW go the right way get a blue slip and have a new number issued as if it a new stamping the examiner should reject it back and then all sorts of issues unfold. I know a lot will not agree but that is how the rules were when I was doing blueslips.

2 options, you can do the illegal thing or the legal thing.... the illegal thing is simple, cheap, and quick.... the legal thing is annoying and cost money.... if ur starting with a brand new case and never are going to put the old engine back on the road, you can stamp the same number on the case and save yourself alot of time and money, but its illegal.... or u can go get a blue slip or more specifically an identification number change, then go to the police, get a police number and head back to the blue slip place to get it stamped and approved..... i only ever got a police number twice, once because i intended to sell the old engine and the second time because a customer preferred to do it that way....

my ally bubble top case has a 4 digit number on top from the manufacturer. the blue slip guy i spoke to said if that is the engine number that it came with then that is the one that it will get.
so is the case illegal or not? if not why?
cheers.

It could be a production code and ALL the cases from that manufacturer would have that number.

I was always led to believe that it was illegal to re-stamp an engine # . However , if there is no # to start with and your old case is shagged , is it illegal to stamp the new case with the old # . To me this is stamping a # and not re-stamping a # , ROD.

still illegal rod, same reasoning as no chassis number and stamping the old one on something else.

It is legal if you are a qualified engine reconditioner.

I went through the process many years ago with a car without a VIN. The police just used a 4 digit number that was already stamped on a panel.

If the police give you a number it will start with "N" (for NSW) and end with "P". Or "V" for Victoria etc.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!
