Long time Veedubber , Aussieveedubbers Newbie
Hi all.
First I would like to say a big thanks to Jim Gow and Jace Tonsen for all of your help in getting me back onto the forum. I'd became a member quite
some time ago but as time had gone by so had my memory of my user name and password. Thanks guys.
Volkswagens have been in my blood for many years. It all started when my brother owned a 1958 VW Beetle of which I later inherited as his family grew
and he required to upscale to a 1972 VW Kombi. My sister owned a bright yellow Type 3 Fastback that had been butchered into a convertible before her
time although had made summer day cruising very cool.
If this wasn't enough to get hooked I got bitten by the bug even harder when I started my first job after leaving school. My brother organised a
trial with a VW workshop as a mechanic of where he used to get work done to his Beetle. The job only lasted for about 10 months before the workshop
closed due to a bad back injury to the owner. I had a great time and learnt so many things and I still remember my very first job that was the test to
see if I could cut it at this workshop. An oil change on a white VW Fastback! Passed the test. I saw so many nice VW's and daily drives come in. It
was from this job my first real car I owned myself made it's appearance. I scraped together my limited savings as a nineteen year old fresh out of
school living up the good life and bought my own 1969 VW Beetle 1500. It was minus the engine as we ended up putting the engine in out of it into a
Kombi before I decided I must have this Beetle.
Many years went by before I finally got my Beetle on the road. Took some time trying to get it all sorted out when bringing in a first year apprentice
mechanic wage. Long story short, I spent 8 years in the trade as a grease monkey tinkering and fiddling with my Beetle at every chance I could get, or
realistically, fiddling with it to keep it on the road and getting me to work.
I have enjoyed many eventful trips end weekends away cruising in my Beetle and loving every minute. On my weekends I am a professional motorsport
photographer covering the Australian Rally Championship, Qld Rally Championship and Qld's Classic and Historic Racing Scene. My Beetle is not going
to be an off road buggy, however will be specced to handle rally roads for my rally photo stage recce. And this is where I am up to now.
My Beetle is sitting in the carport waiting for it's new engine to be fitted. I am still waiting on more parts to arrive for once the VW shops reopen
after Xmas an New Years. Until then, I have a huge box of VW bits to keep me busy.
Hopefully I will have everything sorted out and driving down the road early next year. Build photos will come soon.
Kristan.
