A little father/son project, 1/72 scale airfix spitfire, I think we had a pretty good result. Young bloke is stoked with it. Building a tank next.

I remember making an 1:72 Airfix Spitfire when I was a kid in the early '70s. It's a great way to learn about these beautiful machines! Check out the bigger 1:32 scale kits too. The Airfix 1:24 Spit is the ultimate.

Never heard of a Spitfire ?!! You've gotta get yourself to a warbirds airshow! The Spitfire was probably the most famous fighter of World War 2, immortalised by saving England during the Battle of Britain (along with the Hurricane). Beautiful shape, magnificent 27-litre twin-stage supercharged V12 Rolls Royce Merlin engine and eight Browning machine guns. Also flown by the RAAF later in the war. The Temora museum has a couple of flying Spits. To hear the sound of the Merlin will give you goosebumps, I guarantee it.

I made a kombi model that required glue. Got distracted and glued my finger to it!

Lee, that most likely would have been Col Paye in his spitfire.

Col was tragically killed while experimenting with water-bombing.......a sad loss to aviation.

Yes Greg,
it was Col's Spitfire...

He also had a Mustang...

it was the most astounding plane to see fly...

Straight UP... and the engine noise.... YIKES..

and then Down over the town...

He used to do the same with the spitfire...
the shape of the wings was an easy giveaway....

I don';t know what happened to the Mustang...??
maybe sold after Cols death...

cheers

Great model of a legend aeroplane well done gentlemen. Mini thread hi-jack sorry, just love the Spit, knew I had some pic's of the ex Col Pay Spit
somewhere for many years with Sid Marshall in Bankstown, then purchased and restored top fly by Col Pay of Scone, sold on to it's current owner
David Lowy of Temora.

Mk VIIIs where belived to be one of the better marks because they where lightly armed and therefore lighter, faster and more manouverable.
Flown to glory by Australians against the Japanese in the defence of Darwin and into the South West Pacific. A true legend of an aeroplane as
are Col Pay and David Lowy.

Here is a pic I took in the early 90's at Richmond and then the early 2000's at Temora painted as an aircraft of the famous Grey Nurse Squadron.

The Temora museum would be a great place to have a Volkswagen cruise / weekend away. We should organise one!

Lee you might be thinking of Col Pay's P-40 Kittyhawk VH-KTH that he restored (first flying P-40 in Australia since the War) but later sold to the USA. However siince his sad death his company (Pays Air Services) contiinues on and they have a good collection of flying warbirds in Scone - including the famous P-51 Mustang VH-AUB. Pays are currently restoring a Spitfire IX.

http://www.paysairservice.com.au/pays/warbirds/index.asp

I always thought the other warbird pilot Judy Pay was Col's wife or sister - but apparently they're not related !
