Gear box question
Hi All,
I have fitted a swing axle gearbox into a beetle chasisis. my issue is when i went to hook up the shift select rod thing under the back seat the grub
screw that goes in on top does not screw into anything because the dimple in the gearbox shaft is on the other side i.e. the bottom.
I could be wrong but I think this is a type3 swing axle gearbox.
My question is how do i fix this so i can select gears. do i just drill a new dimple/hole into the other side of the gearbox shaft or is there some
way of turning it around without affecting the selectors in the gearbox?
Any help appreciated.

Hi
You can turn the block upside down and fit fhe grub screw in from the bottom.
If you choose to drill a dimple it must be 100% accurate otherwise you will have another problem.

thanks for the reply. i tried to turn the block up side down but then it means I can't connect it to the actual shifter shaft as that is then up the
wrong way. This is just so strange. i have never encountered this before.

So it's an early car and coupling. The late one (68> will turn over
with no problems. Early one you will need to drill a dimple. Do a trial assemble to locate the top correctly. Because the shaft rotates....you want
the dimple to be centre top when in the 1st/2nd gate. Drill it only 1/3rd or so deep and test. You can then fudge it a little either way if not
correct and you have the gear.

Jase, please excuse the hijack here but its kinda on topic and saves making another thread.
I've got 2 AH IRS gearboxes both from 71 superbugs sitting in the shed and interestingly they have both bug and type 3 coupler dimples top and bottom
of the shift rod
Has anyone ever seen that before?
One is the factory gearbox from my first bug and I can confirm is totally untouched (bought from freinds who owned it since only a few years old)
I have a couple of DC type 3 boxes and they only had the dimple on the bottom and my stock AT Lbug box is only on the top so weird that the AH have
both.
