WPVW Dean's preparation for Sydney VW Drags

A few days ago I removed my right inlet manifold to fix an air leak between the manifold and the head. Once I had the weber linkage undone I decided that I may aswell put a turbo on it now.

My girlfriend Celeste begins by removing the air cleaners, weber linkages, fuel lines, throttle return springs, and gets her hands dirty for the first time.

The Webers have now been removed, along with the breather box, coil, and engine lid hinges, so there is more room to manufacture the turbo system

The cause of the air leak has been found with a split inlet manifold gasket.
2 new gaskets were manufactured and the inlet manifold refitted.
I will be using a Garrett roller bearing T4 turbo for this conversion.

How much boost and what fuel are you planning on running Dean? What comp are you running ATM? I'm guessing some mods to the bootlid are in order lol

Yes I think some bootlid modifications are definitely in order  it currently has 10.1:1 compression and I have been using unleaded fuel as this car is my daily driver. I still want to keep it street legal so I will be switching to e85. Not too sure on the boost yet. The turbosmart wastegate comes with a 7psi spring so I'll see how that goes.

Umm yeah I'd start at 7 psi.... That t4 of yours hold be capable of plenty more though.

Wish we could get e85 over her in wa

This is only a suggestion but I would rethink the 10:1 compression , I would start around 8.2 . Car is beautiful. When my wife Sue and I were first together she used to help me work on my bug, she actually pulled the engine herself, might better marry yours before she gets away, hahahahha Mike McCarthy

Haha thanks mike. Yea I certainly would rethink the compression if I was going to run unleaded fuel. This is part of the reason why I chose to use e85, so I could still keep the high compression with the turbo

after mounting the turbo to the intake plenum , we manufacture the exhaust outlet from the turbo in 3" mandrel tubing .
The exhaust is fitted with a control valve before the small muffler which will assist in keeping the exhaust note much quieter . When Dean drives his bug on the street on light throttle the valve will be fully closed and the exhaust gasses can only pass around the outside edge of the butterfly , but when he stands on the accelerator pedal the butterfly opens fully allowing maximum exhaust gas flow and the throttle effectively becomes ' The LOUD Pedal '

the turbo oil drain is connected and all the plumbing is finished . All we need to do now is fabricate intake manifold support brackets , fabricate an accelerator cable and then dyno tune when Deans Holley arrives .
Tonight we fitted a spare 850 methanol Holley to Deans bug to do an engine start-up prior to his new carburettor arriving and all sounds great !!
The exhaust note is even quieter than had first suspected it would be ....... Dean is getting very excited now !!

today Dean fabricated some brackets to support the intake manifold under the Holley . The upright brace is fabricated from 30x30x3mm aluminum angle and the 2 smaller rear braces are fabricated from 25x3mm aluminum flat-bar .
Dean also fabricated some small steel angle brackets which I welded to the exhaust and the intake plenum for the braces to bolt to . His finished product looks great and works really well to stabilise the Holley

The entire turbo system is removed , all components are fully welded & the welds are ground back .... then all of the pipes are prepared & painted in 2000deg exhaust paint

Dean also installs a Turbosmart dual-stage boost controller so that he can cruise the streets on 7psi boost & then at the flick of a switch the turbo boost will rise to 14psi for a little added power .:lol::lol:

Dean also installs the Holley black fuel pump with Aeroflow fittings

Really looking forward to seeing and hearing about the drivability of that intake system Dean... I'm about to redo the setup on the POS when my stroker goes together, and that kind of setup is what was thinking... Very interested in seeing the results.
