Shifter Mods

I'm sick of being hunched over when when diriving around town so I was wondering if anyone can iform me on whats involved with fitting a splitty/bus shifter, and which models will fit.

I beleive I read someone on here has done it with a split window shifter and a couple of quick shifters. Can anyone advise?

One a side note also, what thread size is the thread on the top of the shifters?

Thank you! Johnny.

How much longer over standard are they? And is it as simple as bolting it in like a standard?

Hi

Its about the same length, just closer to the driver.

If you have an early model it bolts straight in, later car you need to remove the shift rod and slot it. The reason being that late shifter are able to rotate 360 degrees in the socket, early Beetles and Type 3s have pin in the bottom ball to prevent rotation.

I'm led to believe mine is a later model swing axel.

Has anyone got any info on fitting the buss shifter? The type 3 shifter sounds like a good idea but I'd also like to explore other options. I also feel that if easily achievable, the bus shifter will give it a more rat/cruiser feel.

Hi

Im pretty sure the bus shifter would need to have the shift rod mod as well.

Would that be including splits or just bays?

Hi

Im pretty sure they need the shift rod mod, anything that has a bent shifter is not allowed to turn.

In that case I may be lucky. My shifter is already bent and doesn't turn. Guessing that means it already has the shifter rod?

In case it helps, I have a later model swing axle box, unsure of year.

The box makes no difference... It's the shift rod that's different.

The one on the right is the one you should have.

Just out of interest that split shifter and quickshift was a trick of using a std Beetle shift lever with a split housing and just the half ball from the quickshift kit. Means you have a stock looking shifter that is actually a quickshifter :)

Another option is having a machine shop extend the thick part of the lever by the amount you want and then bending it for you if necessary. If the welds are professionally done it should be easily strong enough.
