62 bug 1916 engine removal questions
G'day guys,
I've recently picked up a 1962 beetle that has a pobjoy 1916cc engine in it.
I've been having some problems with the current exhaust so I bought a new one. As this is all new to me can someone please direct me to a "how to"
for removing the engine or something like that (I had a quick search but found nothing).
Also, while I have the engine out what should I check, adjust or paint. I am pretty keen to paint the tinware once i get it out. Do I have to use
special heat paint or would normal spray paint be fine? Cheers for any help you guys can provide!

Take off the carbs ( i assume it has duel kadrons)
Put a trolley juck underthe sump.
disconnect fuel, throttle and wiring.
Undo 4 trans to motor botls
pull back and lower jack.
should take you 15 minutes max.

That sounds pretty easy, ill have to find a trolley jack though. Also Im pretty sure my car has one of those deep sumps that stick out, will that be a
problem?

Right, Ok - first time engine pull eh ??? Engine pulls can be a lot of fun (in a good way)... still remember the sense of achievement first time I did
it.
Birdman has the basics, but a couple of extra details:
- For "take off the carbs" you'll also want to take off the instake manifolds for clearance. Also be sure to stuff some rags into the ports to
stop crud etc. falling into your engine.
- If you have heater boxes you'll need to disconnect the control cables for them too.
- For deep sump engines better off fabbing up support for the jack... just a square frame from bits of pine is fine... so gives you a nice flat/level
surface for the jack rather than trying to balance on just the sump. Other option is to get one of those trolley jack engine cradles that yasdnil on
here makes and sells.
- With the trans to engine bolts NEVER loosen them unless weight of the engine is on the jack. Undo bottom ones first, then the top ones (from inside
the engine bay) so that you're never relying on just the jack to stop an engine from falling on you. Super critical if you ever pull the engine from
an auto or semi-auto.
- When sliding the engine back make sure you've cleared the input shaft in the trans before attempting any lowering.
- If you're leaving the fan shroud on you'll need to get the car up pretty high to be able to slide the engine out from underneath it, otherwise
can strip fan shroud, genny, stand etc. off the engine once it's at ground level to slide it out.
Engine to trans bolts need a 17mm spanner, carbs usually a 13mm spanner, manifold nuts 13mm short socket, screwdriver for fuel line clamps, 8mm
spanner for heater control cables and throttle cable.
15 mins is about right for someone with experience working quickly.
If you do it inside an hour on your first time then you're doing well.
While the engine is out good idea to check:
- the clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel surface
- throwout bearing and arm
- oil leaks either behind the flywheel or in the bell housing

btw - you can substitute a mate and two long planks for the trolley jack, but I wouldn't recommend it for your first time.

Woah this looks like its going to be awesome fun! Im trying to find a trolley jack now, and then ill just make up a square frame for the sump. Thanks
heaps for the info guys, knowing my luck it will take me a full day to work this one out though

Piggabeen, its 10 mins from Coolangatta. If I can make up a rolling frame to rest the engine on it should be easy. I've found a few how to videos on
youtube with stock engines. Nothing with the dual dellorto's though.

unbolt carbies and manifolds from off the cylinder heads.
then unbolt alternator/genny clamp off of stand and 2 bolts on side of fan housing fan housing and lift lot out . may have to move dissy when lowing
the motor down.
