Some basic Beetle questions, please be gentle!

So for fear of asking some stupid questions, can someone please help me out. My first car was a Beetle but that was when I was 15, a long time ago.

66 model Beetle, are they a 4 seater or 5 seater as standard? There's no plate so it isn't obvious.

How do the passenger doors lock and unlock when they have no keyhole on the outside and no lock knob inside (just the old style handle)?

Is it normal for the rear to have the wheels at a slight angle when empty and there is no weight in the back? I know they angle a bit with no engine but this has the motor in it, has wider rims which would make it more noticeable I'd imagine?

Anyone know what year seat belts became mandatory in qld?

That is all for now.

They didn't have any rear seat belts, so you can put as many people back there as you can squeeze in! The later ones were plated as 4 seaters and are the same size, so I'm pretty sure you can call it a 4 seat car.

There should be a keyhole I believe? I'm not sure where the locks are, I've only had 1970s Beetles, but they have key holes and lock knobs.

Show us a photo of your rear camber and we'll tell you whether it's normal or not. Swing axle Beetles do tend to have a bit of camber on the back, normally positive camber when they're stock and riding high, and then negative if the torsion bars/rubbers have sagged.

Generally in Australia, rear seat belts came in for 1971. Not sure if Queensland was different, but for 1966 you shouldn't need rear belts. You do need front ones though.

To lock the passenger door the interior door handle goes forward, to open the door it goes rearward, drivers door outside key only.

Hello and welcome. There are no dumb questions if it means you learn something new. Seatbelts became mandatory in 1966. You can fit as many people in as you feel safe to carry, as they are not complienced. The early beetles had no passenger door lock. You just push the handle forward from the inside to lock. Hope this helps. Cheers

Thanks. I've got a bug which is half stripped out and full of boxes of parts, so I haven't even had a chance to go through it and work out whats there and what I need, apart from the obvious stuff. It just occurred to me there were no lock knobs and no keyhole on the passenger side but that makes sense.

Now the age old battle begins - keep the kombi sell the beetle or keep the beetle sell the kombi. I bought the bug because it was half restored, totally rust free, came with a load of new parts and was cheap. I actually quite like it now that I have one.

Thanks for posting these questions. I have a 67 and I too was wondering how to lock the doors...Not sure if I should admit it but I thought it was just a case of being unlocked with no valuables and a big dogt on the back seat/club lock on the wheel!Noob...

the benefit of other's experience/knowledge!

Many thanks...

But then I'd also need a country buggy, a split, an oval, a razor, a split bus, a kubelwagen, a schwimmer, a baja, a manx, etc etc.

I see a problem with this logic, but then on the other hand it is sound....scary:lol:

So the previous owner has started a resto on this, done the paint mostly and has removed the front indicators (and welded up the holes) as they were going for the rod kind of look. Where do the rodded ones generally have the indicators on the front? Wondering whether to just put them back on the guards (they are there I believe) or do something different. I've seen them inside the headlights which seems to be the US way, no idea if thats legal here but lots of newer cars have them there so you only see them when they are on/flashing. Same goes for those little T bar bumpers the cal look bugs have, lot cheaper than a set of bars but are they legal in Qld? Even the places selling them can't tell me.

They have gone for the minimalist approach, removed badges but kept the side trims (paint colour change along that line), there are J pipes and fan housing blockoffs meaning no heater but I can live with that, lots are that way, 14 inch wide rims, so has the makings of something nice.

They never had any sort of vent fans did they?

You wont get a beetle through rego with T Bars instead of bumpers in QLD, people put them on afterwards.

Thats what I thought. However if I know the way the law works you'd be just as "busted" if you crash with them on afterwards. May be a case of put those on (because they are cheap and easy to get) if I'm going to sell it or proper bars on if I'm keeping it. You see a few for sale with them on in Qld.

Do you happen to know if the Lap/Sash can be replaced with just Lap Belts & still pass roadworthy in Qld?

First you need to ensure the lap belts you buy comply with Australian standards and their fitments with ADR.

There are many belts on the market that can be purchased here and overseas that dont comply.
