Stupid fines.
Today i got pulled over in "Miami Vice style" for having my arm ON the window (protruding limb law)... and tell me this beautiful country has not
become a police state!
Driving at a leasurely 40km (observing the speed limit) two police officers run out onto the road, Miami Vice Style signalling me to pull over. At
first i was stunned, WTF is this all about, it felt like a freakin ambush.
So I got the "license please?" to which i had to ask "What in the world are you pulling me over for?" to which the officer responded "We dont
need a reason to pull you over, but today you had your arm out the window". Stunned i said to the police officer "I dont know what to say to that",
which he interpreted as an admission of guilt "So you admit to having your arm out the window?". No i didnt say that, i actually cant believe that
you pulled me over for that, and no my arm wasnt out the window but on the window.
So i flicked him my license and he went to do the standard checks. Nothing! He came back advising that he was letting me off because i had used up all
my demerit points and if he fined me i would lose my licencse.
Seriously. WTF.

True, but before that, it was ILLEGAL to NOT stick your arm out to give a hand signal [stop or turn].

I have been cautioned more than once over the years, in each case the officer pointed out what I had done wrong and then sent me on my way. I have
noticed that mates and even myself on one occasion can confirm that it is quite often not what you say when pulled over but the way you say it, makes
a huge difference, not that I'm suggesting that anyone commenting here has been agresive or otherwise.
The post about the shape of the gear stick knob has me scratching my head, I've done a quick search and can't find anything that sugests that there
is a "legal" or "illegal" shape for a gear stick knob. Reckon I'd be challenging that one real quick.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

I reckon half these cops would have coronarys if they looked inside some of these ratrods around with 6 foot high kombi gearsticks that have welded on
spanners, grenades, pistons, baby seal heads etc for gearstick knobs.
and thats not even starting on things like the seat springs with no padding and potatoe sacks on them or half the steering wheel chopped off

Hope that wasn't MY ENGINE you were thrashing, Ben.
I know this will sound like a "Good Old Days" story, But it is true. Things have changed a lot.
One night about 50 years ago, I managed to [easily] outrun a police EK Holden in my Beetle [which clocked 102 MPH at Bathurst]. After a search, they
finally found me, and when the two cops got out and walked towards my car, I thought I was going to jail. There were the typical 'old' cop, and
'young' cop, and they went over my car with the torch, checking it out.
What happened next, to put it mildly, amazed me. The 'old' cop booked me for 'a noisy exhaust', and said "Keep that sort of speed for the race
track in future, will ya"......I DID.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

So the Berg shift in our bus and the sequential ratchet shift in my mates EH are illegal because of the rectangular shape?

there are many other things like that , that are now against the law...
like NOT having Your hand brake ON when parked...
even if an automatic...
or windows nearly closed all the way, and all doors locked before going to pay for Your petrol.. , naturally Your handbrake would be ON and the engine
Off.. lol
and any NON Genuine accessories are cause to be booked..
on modern cars...
[ Policeman would need to know everything about cars though.. lol]
although this law doesn't get used all the time, otherwise there would be no BIG mufflers hanging off cars..
Does get used on P Platers in NSW.. lol
Sounds like the Highway Patrol officers in NSW... lol

Oh i know about this one, and i believe it was introduced to prevent clowns hanging out of car windows (which actually makes sense). I had one of my
cop mates try explain that people have had their limbs torn off in this way, to which I responded that there have been more people with limbs torn off
while all their extremities were within the car.
Today, it appears that everyone wants to bubble wrap every detail of our lives, to protect us from all these really dangerous things that could kill
us. Every day i see more and more regulation of the silliest little detail. For example, did you know its actually illegal to beep your horn without a
reason... no i am serious. They tried introducing a law to ban people from using iPods when crossing the road (really???). By doing this, we have
established a culture of fear, that parents are scared to let their kids out of house. God help us if a child was to move away from the Nintendo and
climb a tree... they could fall and hurt themselves. Today, even the stupidest little thing can have a law attached to it, to protect us from
ourselves. What a load of revenue raising BS!
Its these little liberties, like hanging your arm out a window on a warm day that i enjoy. I have concluded that by punishing us for lots of little
things, regulating every little detail of our lives, we will be less inclined to question the big decisions that really matter. Arm out the window
fines, speeding fines, parking fines... before you know it there will be smoking in car fines. Where does it end?
Its unfortunate that we havent got a healthy culture of protest in Australia, imagine this scenario... highly unlikely!

I'd like to ban ipods.
I remember in the late 60s, in one year there were about 3 people had their arms cut off in collisions because they were resting on the windows. I
think that was when the (good) law was introduced.
The horn law is a good law also. Why should I be annoyed by dickheads in the middle of the night.
It sounds like you are part of the me generation.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
