Heaters without hose outlets on the fan-shroud?
My 56 had a judson equipped 40 without heater hose outlets. It's also missing the heater boxes on the exhaust. Is there a way of getting the heater
to work without the fanshroud outlets?
Or do I need heater boxes AND a new fanshroud?
Failing all that, is anyone using a electric fan heater in their bug? I don't want to chop up the car, but if there is a simple way to put one in,
I'd consider that.

The buggy had a very good heater actually. It gets down near 0deg where i live. Any tips on stock heaters then?

I believe the simplest way is to use standard heater boxes..
the original early German ones had large heatsinks in them that give off plenty of heat'''
it gets below zero here at times in winter but the heater always works..
I couldn't live without the heater in My beetle..
the early beetles disn't have the hoses from the shroud, they stopped the heat from escaping below the push rod tubes and forced it into the
car...
the later system just used fresh air to push the heat thru the heater boxes into the cabin..
You could possibly use ambulance fans [round fans fitted to late Kombis] to suck air from below the push rod tubes to inside the cabin..

What I did years ago when I had heater boxes on the car but a 36hp fanshroud with no outlets was run some flexible pipe from the heater box inlet to
under the cylinders near the pushrod tubes. Worked quite well.
I don't think electric heaters will do it, however you never know.

There are petrol heaters, but are exy/collectable.

From the fanshroud aka the fan. It worked really well, I got the idea from an old VW guy who was into buggies, he told me that's how they did it, I
didn't think it'd work until I tried it.
The tube for the heater went straight into the airstream of the hot air coming off the cylinders, so between the pushrod tubes and the sled tinware.

didn't actually look at these, but have never ever seen an electric heater capable of actually heating the interior like a normal VW heater.. in cold
weather..
You would need a very large engine with an even larger alternator to supply enough current to all the electric heaters... lol
although many years ago, while restoring My beetle in the winter in a carport [temp about 4=6C]
I put My wifes hair dryer into the heater duct under the body and it did a great job... but about 2400 watts at 240 volts..
so a 240v hair dryer and an inverter for 3000 watts would help... maybe two of them when driving.. lol

You said You used the fan ??
but didn;t have heater outlets... on the shroud??
for air pressure...

Yeah thats right Lee, I mean the fan pushing the air over the cylinders and then into the tube. There's a lot of airflow coming out from the sleds
and it's preheated going into the heater box so it probably doesn't need as much flow.

I've run my oil cooler on the inside before, guess you don't have a full flow oil system then pete?
Always wondered if i could run a hotrod style heater in my oil system

Quite a few small Japanese Kei cars use electric heaters, my favourite for size, availability, etc, is out of the Mazda 121 (bubble) from the
'90s.
They work well in Japan, although it only gets to 20 below up there......
