Detent plug?

G'day all
I'm trying to track down an oil leak that i think may be transmission fluid, pale green in colour. The leak only occurs when the car (59 bug) is parked on a 10 degree or greater slope, front of car down hill. After doing some investigation, on this sight & others, I have come across 3 detent plugs. Being new to the game I have never heard of them before. Can anybody tell me what they do, how to find them & how to replace them?
Cheers

Not sure what they do but I had the same problem years ago. Plugged them up and no more leak. I just used some bolts I think with silicone to prevent leaks. This thread might help .

Thanks , your original thread was the first I ever head about these things. It makes a lot of sense that one or more of these plugs is missing.:tu:

results of Google search shows no shortage of places to buy them:

https://www.google.com.au/#safe=off&sclient=psy-ab&q=vw+gearbox+detent+plugs&oq=vw+gearbox+detent+plugs&gs_l=hp.12.. .1868.13437.0.15759.23.23.0.0.0.0.266.5047.2-23.23.0.crnk_timepromotiona..0.0...1.1.16.psy-ab.0RqKV86QxQE&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm =bv.47534661,d.dGI&fp=94755be783c1b561&biw=1680&bih=886

Only a few years ago they were practically unobtainable.

Regards,

Matt.

Thanks guys. I'm going to have a go at changing the transmission oil myself. I know to use SAE 90 Hypoid oil & not to overfill her. Can anybody tell me where to buy the oil pump that transfers the oil from the bottle to the gearbox?
I checked this out on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh0y7f0nYXA  , seems easy enough!

Make sure you can get the filler plug undone BEFORE you undo the drain plug and let all the oil out.

Many people have been caught with a stuck filler plug and an empty gearbox.

Regards,

Matt.
