What are these holes?

I've found some holes in my 62 beetle...

Behind the rear seats, on the bottom of the luggage area, there are two rectangle holes, one on either side, each set in a recess. I don't recall taking any seals or bungs out of these holes when I disassembled the car, but they must have something to close the gap?

Any ideas?

I believe this has come up before, and someone said that they were for mounting the body on some kind of cradle in the factory?

The factory method of sealing it was a small sheet metal disc of about 12mm diameter gooped on with seam-sealer.
