If you want to maintain it's 'Flying Flea' provenance (history) , I'd definately leave the colour and be very careful what I did.

I'm with Matt... avoid changing anything that marked it as the Flying Flea.
Things like rims, colour, interior/cage and obviously any body mods.
Of course it's your car tho so do what you want, but yeah - you did ask for opinions.

there's not much 'flea' left in it, so paint it what ever colour you like........there's no point restoring/rebuilding a car if you're not going
to be 100% happy at the end of it.

What ive heard it was a chook pen up untill mike spikat sorry about the spelling took owner ship and had a 1916 methanol injected engine in it then
peter richards owned it and had a 2275 methanol injected engine both of them set the record seperated times for being the quickest four cylinder back
in 1980 and 1981 then i think andrew seymour vwma photographer he had to sell it to finance his wedding and after that a man in sunny bank
sounds like he took all the goodies out of the flea when he owned it
Then my dad brought it of back in 2005 and
And when my dad owned it was the vw of his dreams and put a bigger engine in it and when he was running it in he broke a axle clean in half. Then put
new carpet and seats in it and went through four gearboxes in it over 5,6 years and he decided to sell it and i had a current car with the same asking
price and he offerd me it for swaps i didnt even have time to thing about it befor i decided hell yes its and oval .
Sorry about any spelling stuff ups as im using my annoying phone lol

Hi
I will check with Henry, but I think its the same car. I will check with him before I make a lot statements that maybe about the the wrong car,
nothing bad mind you.
When Henry had owned the car it was black with orange windows, it looked hot, why not go further back in its roots to then?

I can remember it from the early 90s when it used to be on the ads for one of the VW performance places either Jeff or Stans.
Had 5 lug centerlines back then.
I vaguely remember it even being in one of the mid 90s mags after it was turned into a street bug.
Volkswagen Australia I think.

I remember when Peter Richards had it had a piece of the metal removed out of the engine bay, when I asked about it I was told it was to fit a
supercharger? If you looked into the vents beneath the rear window you could see the engine. If you have any questions why not ring mr Richards?
He's a good talker.

I was hoping that Peter Richards would chime in on its history after I sold it but I'll give you a shortened history from it's beginning
It was originally built in 1980 by the Perrott Brothers and myself from a oval shell that the Perrott Brothers had sitting in their backyard. All the
paintwork, interior and signwriting (cut out of contact paper) was done by Noel and Fred Perrott. The floorpan and driveline was the the one I had
under my (yellow) oval street car I drag raced sucessfully in 1979 - it just needed a freshen-up
The (Porsche Guards Red) oval was built to run in the D/MP class of Drag Racing
It's first run was at Adelaide Raceway for the 1980 Drag Racing Nationals. The wiring for the car was completed at an Adelaide motel while the car
was still on the trailer (talk about cutting it fine!!)
The engine was a home built 74mmx92mm using a welded crank, home ported heads and my current 2" IDA Webers
It was a good combination as it ran under the National Record for D/MP on it's first pass!!!
The car was sucessful in 1980 setting the speed and E/T ANDRA National Record for D/MP as well as winning the 1980 Australian Drag Racer Grand Finals
as well as a few Castlereagh meetings.
The following year, D/MP became a V8 only class, so to stay in Drag Racing, I aquired a supercharger, used the 1835 out of my 1978 Drag Racing Karmann
Ghia and ran DD/G. There are some photos on the forum of the supercharger set up posted by Dave Butler - hence the hole under the back window, it was
to fit the McGee 2 port Fuel Injection System
The class was too tough as the car didnt't have the performance to be competetive against the blown 6 cylinders at the time so It was sold off to
Peter.
If you need to know more, just ask - H
As a side note, the black Drag VW that Steve Carter spoke about was my first (unsucessful) attempt at Drag Racing. It lasted a couple of meetings and
was sold to Barry Warn. It has attended Valla a couple of times , now on the street, black with a whale tail and Aunger kidney slot mags

Cheers Henry. I ended up getting the Injection off John Spink, who bought the motor off Peter in the mid 90's for his sports sedan. The motor
unfortunately didn't last long, but he kept the injection and the heads for a rainy day...............it just so happened he went "subie" power and
I ended up with the parts !

Just talking with Andrew Seymour and because he isn't on the forum he wanted me to pass on this message to you...
"Just to do your own repairs and modifications as necessary and as per personal taste, but you just can not change history. That car spent 15
years as a chicken hutch before spending 10 years as a drag car then I put it back on the road and did over 400,000 km over the next 10 years in it,
That cant be deleted."
Andrew very much has a soft spot for it, and i think if you ever sold it he would be so tempted to own it again.

Unfortunately, I don't know where the "chicken hutch" idea came into being.
At the beginning of its drag car career, the body shell was just one of those "I'll get around to it" deals that was sitting under cover in the
Perrott Brothers' backyard.
I apologise if I have taken some of the "colour" from the car's heritage - Henry
