I loved going to school on those buses. Brings back good memories of jumping off the platform before the bus stopped and being able to jump on even if the bus was just leaving the stop.

Great shot of the old Sydney AEC / Leyland double decker buses. Some of them will be doing tourist trips around Eastern Creek raceway this weekend (during the CMC Classic car show). We'll have the VWs on display too.

Interesting that a bus going to Manly Wharf would have an ad for Lanock Motors. Manly never had a Lanock Motors, it was Freshwater Motors during the air-cooled era. The nearest Lanock Motors was at St Leonards.

I remember the old black and white '88' bus that ran from Bankstown to Hurstville, used to have an ad for Swantons Pty Ltd, the Hurstville VW dealer, on the back as recently as the mid 1980s. I wish I'd taken a photo at the time. Today all the local buses are run by Veolia.

I'm with you too Yogie ,our bus company had 2 out our way and travelling to high school in the late 70's on them was certainly different ,slow as all hell up the hill ,and watching the speedo needle going haywire whilst going along was certainly different:spin:

Phil, when I lived at Hurstville [Dora St] in the late '40s, I caught the 'Blue Bus' to school at Bexley. Was it Pioneer Bus Co? They were good-looking buses - blue & red.

The best looking buses in the area then were the Hurstville Grove buses. They were red & brown, and always immaculate, and highly polished.

I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Hi Greg,

That's a bit before my time! I was thinking more of the late '60s and early '70s. I can't remember the name of the bus company of the time; the Hurstville 88 bus was painted white with a bold black stripe, whereas the Punchbowl buses that went to Roselands were red and yellow with green detail. The Bankstown One-Tree Point 24 bus (my local) was similar but a different company. But only the black and white 88 had a Swantons ad on the back.

These were my old school buses in the 70's and 80's between Cabramatta and Canley Vale High. Katen & Heath (Silverline) and Calabro.
