Picking up Bug number 4

Picking up our 4th Bug (not all at the same time), a white 1970 1500 Beetle from Melbourne on Sat 21st. Driving it back to its new home in Coffs over the weekend. So if you see a Vic-plated (white letters on black , KMN-???, forgot!) Bug on the road heading north over the weekend, what you're seeing is the end result of a long search, and me with a smile probably.
Will get some pics up as soon as I can.
Cheers all, Rob.

Drove 1400 kilometres from Box Hill to Coffs.
This is a quick pitstop at Euroa Saturday arvo.

A view I got pretty used to.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt243/hazmat5765/DSC_0239.jpg

This bird was outside my motel room at Holbrook in the Sunday morning and came inside to share my motel biscuits.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt243/hazmat5765/DSC_0240.jpg
Only one night stopover at Holbrook. We did 1012 kilometres on the Sunday, arrived in Coffs around 10.45pm, it ran so reliably I was amazed. Had a couple of small issues, but that is what makes these cars great, they are simple to fix and get going again. Already got it in for blue slip work for some rust in the front left wheel arch.
At home in Coffs Harbour.

Nice beetle..The lack of decklid vents and Chrome dash trim make me think its a 68 or 69..unless its plated 1970 and had some things changed?.

Thanks all
My wife and daughter love it.
It's funny how owning a 43 year old car that needs work done on it makes you feel good, isn't it!
Rob.

If it was theirs then yes, home safely. Nice little weekend adventure to be honest.
Cheers, Rob.

68 had the early style speedo with fuel gauge, early heater vents and no hazards or cable release fuel door.

Ok, here's the number on the transmission hump under the back seat. What are we looking at, 1969?

Now with its own set of NSW plates.
Tidied up a few things, revamped original running boards, fixed original VW radio, spare tyre pressure windscreen washer system works, a bit of rust cut out, new shocks, new l/h ball joint, fish oil here and there, a good polish, wheels balanced and now to enjoy :)
Rob.
P.s. I like the black original rims look, thanks mystery fang for putting the idea back in my head. http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=101763

Great to see another 1500 being loved.

Can't wait to drive our 68.

We'll be going the original black and white two tone rims on ours.

That'll look good too.
I found that our wheels are painted black on the inside, and where the silver was scratched off from the hubcaps it was black under that.
Safe travels, Rob.

After the experience of previous Bugs I decided this week to replace the windscreen rubber (even though it was still pretty good) and check the metal underneath.
Even though there was very little evidence to indicate corrosion under the windscreen rubber, my wife insisted that it be checked asap. I'm glad we forked out the time and money to check.

It looks like we caught it before anything serious started to develop............we gotta look after these old beauties eh!

I had a quiet week as paid work goes, so I got into the tidying up after the windscreen was put back in.
Went for the plain windscreen rubber ( I kept the trim though just in case ) as I like uncluttered simple lines. I also tidied up some wiring behind the dash, fitted the bamboo under dash tray that came with the heap of parts the ex-owner gave me, keyed alike all the locks, and fitted a neat little tacho I got off fleabay.
All in all a nice few days.
Safe travels, Rob.

Thanks mate.
Just thought this may interest someone, Autobarn and Supercheap are selling these sunshades, they measure 100cm x 50cm and they fit perfectly into the rooflining structure around the back window of our 1500 Bug. They are pretty effective and will do till I can afford venetians or something similar. They are about $5 or $6 each and the one on the back window stays on even with the windows open cruising on the freeway.

My lovely wife bought me a Classic Autosound Stereo, and dual cone single speaker for Christmas. It's been fitted for a while now and really makes cruising even better with AM/FM, USB and AUX.

At night. Crap picture I know, but it looks good in the flesh. Also fitted a metric speedo recently.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt243/hazmat5765/96def175-c289-456d-8d02-98bbd9a2aeb0.jpg
Fitted some new fuel lines, checked and lockwired the fuel inlet on the Solex 30 Pict 2. Tested it all with a Sunday drive up Waterfall Way to Dorrigo today, all good!
Safe travels all, Rob.
