What V8 to use???


I was just having some wild thoughts of putting a V8 in my T3 SC. Anyone know what would be the best engine as far as weight and reliability goes. dont want know heavy iron block in the back???

A nissan V8 would be nice but a rover ( GM ) 3.5 lt might be the most affordable option. Mitchell

I think there maybe rego issues using a non EFI motor in a EFI car, I vote for the 1UZ as well or why not a Subaru 6? Rover engine would need a rebulid while you can still buy usable 1UZs

A 2000's turbo 2.5l Subaru engine will be very light and have good torque and horsepower.

1UZFE is heavy, Rover V8 has low power and poor emissions. I don't know why you wouldn't put a cheap 220hp Subie EZ30 6 cylinder in there.
You know it fits and it makes that lovely flat 6 sound.

Yeah I know it's not logical, but I just love the old school beefy sound of a V8. More of a novelty then anything. I'm wanting it as part of my marketing for my business. We'll see what happens. One thing I also like about alot of v8's is that they are compatible with LPG. Giving it the power and descent fuel economy.

I agree, I don't know why anyone would want a V8, they are so over rated and often low on power for their size, narrow power band and heavy as hell (generally speaking for aussie market), not to mention drink fuel like no tomorrow. Though there are some good V8 out there.


I would also go for a 6 of some description, suby would be the way to go. Its virtually made for conversion like this.

IF you are really wanting to go V8, maybe try the LS1. popular engine, designed well, well documented and heaps of resources out there, crate engines from the factory are cheap (under 10k) and they are light considering.


Dry weight said to be 190 ish Kg, fully dressed bit over 200.

chev LS gen 3 or Gen 4, lighter than lexus and you can use the factory ecu (cheap). i would go for the LS2 6.0 297kW

Not that funny really. By the time I spend 10K plus on a good conversion and upgraded gearbox maybe better to spend that on a good strong ute for towing and keep the T3 original. I just love my Volksies and am always looking for ways to make them work in all areas of my life. Just need more money really.

but nothing is as fun as converting an old with new engine and Power! even if it costs more than a whole newer vehicle.

what ever you do, don't use the 253, they are a heap of shit. Most 4cyl today have more power than those ever did and they are hit and miss with longevity.

yes yes yes,,, i still have my Lexus V8 duel-cab & yes it really is good (maybe the gearbox needs a look at again tho :-) )
plenty of grunt,,, it is quite a broard powerspread,,, & it doesn`t chew juice,,,, it`s quite economical really,,, same money i spend driving to Byron bay & back as the old suby L-series wagons we had

however, the engines (altho it is alloy) is not very lightweight,,, top heavy & 32 of every damn thing :-)

my choice would be a mildly worked P76 4.4 alloy v8 & yep stuff the gas onto it

great donk, they are actually light, plenty of grissle & cheap as chips & super reliable opnce you flick the stock pistons out the door & fit some JP`s or some such

Oh & i have about 12x p76 donks just sitting here :-) going cheap :-)

I would only change it once the old drive line is stuufed
v6 toyota heaps of go and common
or v8 commodore motor , something that you can buy parts from auto barn ,repco etc.
who cares about weight, most cars 1700kg and 4wd 2000 kg plus.:blush:
its not about saving fuel money because your allready minus--10k for the change over.

Stick a 348 chev in it, their old school, collectable, increasing in value and have a note all of their own, i will also vote for the 253, rover, uz and suby, choice comes down to old school and not so refined but fix yourself on the side of the road vs modern effecient go like the clappers but not so user fix friendly/cheap, mind you a good modern motor shouldnt need fixing...apparently

you could do what a number of people already have in their bay windows, turbo or SC a L27 V6 engine (aka holden V6)

reliable long lasting engines and love boost. They become monsters once boosted and are cheap. 200-500 bucks for a good engine.

my chocie 3 litre Subaru 6 cylinder, 2nd chocie the Lexus. mat eof mine in Wallan is building a Lexus V8 trike, nearly finished. had heaps of issues with the ECU etc took 6 months to sort it.

I was going suggest talking to you. I was chatting with a client of mine - Rob Dyba the other day as I turned up for a meeting in the splitty. He was talking about a mate he helped put a lexus v8 into his ute and I figured it was you.

Was saying that you eat gearboxes a bit but can pull a wheelie in 2nd?

Tried to convince me to do the same but I just can't get past the air cooled. Nothing more sensible in a QLD climate I reckon.
