Polish or wax for my bug? What types do people use?

No plans for any paint touch ups in the near future, I kind of like the original unrestored look, it's not bad enough to be a rat but not good enough to be a show car, so what paint protection is best? Wax? Polish? Paint rejuvenator followed by one of those?

I looked in the Repco catalogue and there are so many brands and types, so what do the hardcore car fanatics recommend? Brands, systems etc? I'm after something to protect what I've got, plus give it a bit of a spruce up. There are a few areas where the paint is very thin so cutting back is not really desirable. I want to be able to do the rims as well as they are painted the same colour as the body and are dull as would be expected. Something good to protect the chrome and other trims would be desirable too.

So what's your favourite, what goes on your show car?

Hi

I normally use Meguiar's brand of canubra WAX on My paint and chrome..
Another I use is Meguiar's GOLD CLASS liquid wax - this should be excellent on original paint.. UV protection too..

These should be available at BIG W and all auto shops..

I'm quite happy to pay good money for the right product. Some of the chep stuff is just crap.

Where do you get that stuff from?

Ok so I said I was willing to pay good money for good product but not half the value of the car. Does anyone seriously pay $1500 for a tiny pot of wax? Price of one tub is 10 times the cost of professional paint protection. I dare say I could re spray her for that too.

And I thought $40 for some of them in the super cheap catalogue was getting up there.

Another dodo user here - initial price is higher but the amounts you use are tiny compared to Meguires.

You want to wash, clay (6-12 monthly depending on your car use) and wax to start off with. Once you have clayed and you see heaps of swirls then a polish is needed.

If your paint is really dull it will need a good polish and wax but will continue to oxidize and so will need a bit more regular care to keep looking nice. I do find the meguires colour restore x to be good for my old square that had dull chalky paint.

For chrome I use autosol! It's awesome stuff and will even remove light rust. A coat of wax on your bumpers will also help protect them.

Yours looks a lot cleaner than mine. My paint is original paint, not restored, touched up in places just by spraying over, I want to tidy up the overspray and protect and preserve what is there.

What was yours like before? And did you redo the black bumper strips? If so what did you use?

My paint work has not been touched since I bought it although it looks like at some stage it had a quick respray. I think I used a black sprY cN on the bar after masking it up

The original black stripe was tape. Just use some electrical tape.

easy way to test which is better get a plastic bag over your hand and go over the part you have used the clay bar on and it will intensify the dirt on the paint at the end you shouldn't feel anything

Sounds like it needs a cut before polishing. I recommend menzerna cutters as you have a good choice of cutting grades from heavy to fine. Swisswax is the bomb and if you have never seen the job it does on paint new and old it is awesome!! Price is bit out there but that one little tiny tub will give you multiple multiple uses. Dodo is good as well and is a Bit more price friendly!! Can't beat hand clay for proper finish as the clay bar cloths do t always remove all grime and do leave swirls and some light scratches so cutting/polishing is needed after. Bowdens own is a very good quality product for the money and I have used it for years on my owns car even before it was commercially available.

Should post some pics of the car so we can see the state of the paint. If your paint is badly oxidised in places it's probably not an idea to use cutters. Even the best polishes will have very little impact if the paint isn't up to it.
