Installing dual base antenna... distance?

Ok so i picked up on of these the other day and am about to install it on the beast.

Seeing i have to drill into the body to install this, i would like to know that i have done it properly.

Is there a "correct" position for the antenna bases/distance between the bases? I have even seen them installed on an angle!

I have looked at a couple cars and it seems everyone is doing it their own way... any recommendations?

Thet were never factory fitted, so just do it wherever.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Both ends are adjustable so pick your spacing that suits where your putting it and go from there.

Just realised something interesting.

If you have a raked stance (like me), and you did mount it straight your antenna would actually be pointing forward (which doesnt really make sense). So on this basis rather than being "almost straight" i will go deliberately angled.

The one I fitted to my '61....in 1961, was angled. I set it at the same angle as the windscreen. From memory the spacing was about 150mm - mountings should be on the 'flat' section of the 1/4 panel.

I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Hi
they were fitted by dealers.. so anything is possible..
they were usually fitted slanted , and the early beetles I had had them fitted slanted.. The Australian antennas were very long and the top support was moveable..
I have always liked the slanted look, as it looks normal to Me... as most were slanted back in the late 50;s - 60's...
if its a long antenna, the two support insulators are best located at least 150-180mm apart to give the antenna strength...
Angle is the way to go...

cheers

Lee

Well it seems i just got my knickers in a knot much about nothing... thats shit... that looks ugly... virgin sheet and i drill holes into it... what an idiot etc etc.

I finished mounting it at the same angle as the windscreen, and freaked out that it looks a tad aggressive, but now that i look at some pics on other cars it doesnt look too bad i suppose. Will take some getting used to.

I've basically done it as per this pic, only a bit closer to the door due to the flash trim getting in the way. Luckily the door clears... phew!!

EDIT: Well it seems that i have buggered it up a little, as the vent window does touch the antenna when opened wide  Not sure what im going to do now as it really irritates me. Might leave it for now and sort it out when i go to do the body work next winter.
