Any Hints For Fitting Handbrake Rubber Boot?

I have a '68 Type1. Bought a new rubber handbrake boot and tried to fit it and gave up. How do you get these suckers on without splitting the rubber where the heater controls poke through?
Cheers.........Wayne

Spray some silicone spray or WD40 into it so it slides over the handbrake easily. Talcum powder will work too if you haven't got the others..
Just gives you more control over it and might help avoid tearing it.
