60's Bilstein jack rod (can't find one...)


I purchased an original bilstein jack from ISP in LA a few months back but it didn't come with a rod. Does anyone know where I might find one (preferably in/near Sydney)??? :crazy:

I only seem to be able to find a couple overseas and you have to purchase the whole jack to get it... Not ideal!

How much do you want for it?
Could i be a real pain in the ass and enquire as to how much it would cost to post to sydney?

My problem is i am overseas at the moment and get home on the 16th, but i'm driving the square down to melb on the 17th/18th,
It would be ideal to have a fully functioning jack-setup for such a long journey methinks! :lol:

If that isn't possible, i have a bit of a blonde question:
will any jack be ok to use on the car (such as one from autobarn) or does it have to be a specific size (ie. bilstien one).

I think you can make up your own mind for that question. Get the handle, by all means, but then have someone who's familiar with the jack help you jack the car up, and back down again. Then get a universal scissor jack and do the same thing, but pay attention to where you locate the head of the jack.

You might just decide to carry both and just use the scissor jack as the originals have a few issues and the scissor jacks are well known and are more versatile.

Ok UberKafer, thanks for the advice, so long as a scissor jack will be fine to use/ fit the car fine and so long as if i get a flat i can jack the car up, then it's all good!
What sort of issues are you talking about with the originals?

the original jack is a bit unstable.
Sometimes when you jack up the car the head of the jack gets close to the car's side panel, if either the foot of the jack slips away from the car or the car slips sideways away from the jack. So when you try to wind the jack back down you get to a point where the jack is scraping the side panel, causing damage.

Another issue with the jacks is the ratcheting up and down, its not for the feint hearted, and most non-VW owners wouldnt have a clue how to get it back down, and have been known to roll the car forward or backward to get it back down, destroying the jacking point.

most people also wouldnt know that to get the front tyres of a beetle off the the ground you have to lift the whole side of the car. But a type3 has front and rear doesnt it?

Anyway, as I said, its worth doing a dry-run with both jacks with someone who is familiar, so you can see it for yourself. I have seen both floorpan sides of of a pristine Karmann Ghia butchered by someone who didnt take any care.
