Looks great as usual Craig.

Just a question on the cover car - how can a 1954 model be a split? The split window was replaced by the oval window in March 1953 . Is it a 1954 model wih a split window grafted in, or has the owner got his year model wrong?

Split window Beetles were never sold in Australia. The earliest models, imported in late 1953 and sold new from March 1954, were ovals.

Australia Post is always on holiday. Magazines were lodged last Tuesday and even I haven't received my 'test' copy yet! Apologies, but I did everything correct at my end. I have heard they are trickling in to mailboxes today.

Got it, thanks Craig.
Phill, it says clearly, even on the cover "Pseudo Split", and the article is called "Split Personality". I haven't read the article yet, but reckon it may have a grafted rear window and dash....

You are right Matt, I bought the mag last night and that explains it. However I posed my original question based only on Craig's image of the cover posted above - which doesn't say Pseudo!

On another topic, I found the article on the old Holden salesman's guide to not selling VWs extremely interesting. GMH must have perceived the VW as a significant sales threat in 1960, with the Beetle the 2nd-best selling car in Australia that year. Holden sales were 66,799 and VW sold 24,652 Beetles in 1960.

In 1961 there was an industry slump due to increased sales tax on cars and a mini-recession. Holden sold 58,710, while VW's sales slumped to 15,254. Ford had also introduced the Falcon, and BMC was about to introduce the Mini.

In 1962 Holden boomed to 72,801 sales; Ford sold 35,456 and Morris sold 25,787. VW recovered to 21,370 but had been passed. VW never bettered the 1960 sales figure of 24,652 Beetles - even the companyt's best overall year, 1964 (31,419 vehicles altogether), they only sold 22,293 Beetles that year. The 1960 Beetle figure is still, to this day, VW's highest ever one-model one year sales figure. The Golf sells around 18,000 a year nowadays.

By 1969 Holden was selling over 109,000 cars a year here, and VW had slumped to just 6,400 Beetles. So maybe the Holden brochure worked!

You can get all the manufacturers' figures for those years by downloading the September 2007 issue of Zeitschrift, here: http://www.clubvw.org.au/september-2007
