type 3 calipers
Does anyone know what the bolt spacing is for t3 calipers and piston size...I have searched the net and think the early t3 calipers are same as t1
bolt spacing and later are 3" spacing,correct??

Not sure of the bolt spacing dimension, all Type3s use 42 mm pistons, the early Type 3 callipers have the same bolt spacing as all Beetles

Was wondering as 914-4 guys use a BMW caliper as a upgrade.a stock 914 caliper is a t3 one but with the 3" spacing so must be the late t3 caliper
....so that means the BMW caliper will not be a bolt on deal to the bug bj spindle...
Lost ya??

Hi
the only OEM calliper that bolts onto a Beetle stub is from a UK car called a Talbot Horizon, I've tried to source these with no luck, they use a 48
mm piston.
The only other solution is to use a plate to adapt another acliper

hi I put these on my 68 beetle years ago used drum brake spindles and brought adaptor plates from vintage vw give borris a ring he would know

Im curious. Second poster said that early type 3s had 42mm pistons on a type 1 spacing.
I havent heard of that before.

Yes the calipers are 42mm, most if not all of the aftermarket sellers sell the type 1 caliper as fitting the type 3. Which is not entirely correct, as
the piston size is different. In '72 they went from 80 cm² to 100 cm² in the pad surface area.

Hi
Not many people are aware of this, even a Sydney VW specialist was unaware of it until we pushed the pistons out of a pair of Type 3 callipers, those
callipers are now fitted to my sons 1303
They are twin pin like a 72 superbug but only have one bleed nipple, so the callipers are left or right handed

Cheers guys for the info...I have purchase some two pot wilwoods to try on the rear.I was thinking about selling my front brakes and also having two
pot on the front but might just run what I already have and plumb in a bias valve,was originally thinking bout making a pedal box with balance bar
etc,but its just more stuffing around and $$ so I'm winging it with the new combo,fingers crossed...

I have made these pedal boxes, copy of a Tilton, been in use in rally cars for a few years and work well allowing use of any brake combination. Have
a couple left, Simon knows of me.

Bolt spacings are different between early and late type 3's. Later type 3's have a wider spacing, and are difficult to get replacements as they
don't fit anything else. They also have the bigger pads as stated in an earlier post.

Just following on from the line of thought about the earlier type 3 calipers (42mm piston and type 1 spacing).
Did they run with the type 1 rotor or the thicker/larger type 3 rotor?
