Why do we need name changes?
OK, so I'm old....but I don't see why we need to blindly follow the Americans. This is Australia, and we have perfectly good names for car bits
already - why change them?
What's wrong with:-
Bonnet
Mudguard
Engine lid
Stub-axle
Over-rider, etc., etc?
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

I agree Greg, I read sometimes in Australian publications where they "swap out the cam etc" that sounds American to me

I watched the channel 9 news last month and the reporter said " the wildfires are devastating NSW" .
I always thought they were bushfires?

Well Greg
I see its actually getting worse all the time now with just about everything going the american way...
although I have always found it difficult to see a mudguard called a wing as in the UK... and the 1/4 window called a side light or something
weird... lol
and I have been asked by Americans what a windscreen was
??? true... its a windshield... lol
also I just wish the motoring writers would use plain english [Aussie english] when describing cars and their parts...
although semaphores seem to be common now...
but I still now they were called trafficators when they were in new cars... and I did see an add in an old VW magazine recently calling them
"trafficators"
and We are stuck with towel rail bumpers...
cheers

It doesn't seem that important, but we should be proud of our Aussie 'uniqueness'. Some of our special words - like some native animals - have
almost disappeared.
In my book, a "cool dude" does not replace "bonzer bloke", to describe someone like Henry Spicak, for example. [Sorry Henry].
Have a narce day!

can only disagree on one point Happy Daze, in my opinion it IS important, language is one very important aspect of our "Australianness" (if that's
a term) the way we are heading we may as well adopt the stars and stripes as our flag.

Years ago in London I was in Typesetting and we had to have a list on the wall for English and American spellings, somebody had replaced the word
'English' with 'correct', you don't get a good response when you say to a client "do you want the American spelling or the correct way"
especially when they're from across the pond On
the subject of parts names etc. when the British sold the Harrier to the Americans all the paperwork had to be reprinted so they could understand how
to work on them.

It's a different language, might as well be Gaelic or Flemish.
I'm teaching my sons to talk Australian, neither English nor 'Merican.

including my grandkids, that sort of thing is fine in the good old US of A, we are not American (yet)

Same here, never even attempted a high five.
Its the "youth" of today, too many cheap overseas TV shows and the internet is to blame.
I watched the Olympics and saw Australians putting their hands over their hearts when the Australian national anthem was played??
