Front trailing arms 'flexing' - The Good Old Days

This is Murray's Corner at Bathurst....Easter, 1963.

The front wheels were stock 4", with Michelin 'X' tyres.

You mean that 22 YO ? Doesn't seem that long ago.

Changing from under-steer to over-steer is simple....just lift the right foot.

Notice I've [only just] kept my 2013 New Years Resolution to "Master the Photo Thing". Thanks Kev, for helping out in the meantime.:tu:

Not sure what you want to know, mac...the seat, as per all the interior and body, was stock. Appendix 'J' rules did not allow any trim or body changes.

If it is the seat BELT that you are wondering about, it was an ex-aircraft lap belt....'Dominion' brand, and don't ask how or why I remember that !

Hi Greg

Great photo. Obviously you were allowed to run an oil cooler, how was it set-up, was the oil taken from the case via drilled holes in gallery or a take-off block in the stock cooler location?

Steve, Jack Bono modified the oil pump [there was nothing available back then], and oil went from the pump through a Vokes full-flow filter, cooler, and back into the case.

Remarkable photos. It takes big cojones to lift a wheel through the Esses with a lap belt and no rollbar.

Would like to know the story behind the action photos :D

Chris, I started racing in 1962 in my VW Beetle that I drove every day. My first car [in 1958] was a 1938 Morris 8/40.

Driving a 500HP Auto Union, with swing-axles, he had to be a hero.....Bernd Rosemeyer.:tu:

Jack Bono was both motivator and mentor.

Jack [white overalls] and I chatting at Warwick Farm, 1963.

Hi Greg

Your really getting the hang of these photos now, I've found that the old black & whites really scan well and even small pictures can be blown up in size and still look good.

When your having a play next time you could try cropping the white area around the photo, the white bit adds a bit to the file size for no benefit.

So Le Mans start, lucky you were a young bloke then, great photos. I remember my local Neptune servo had Neptune Mini model cars, did they ever do a model of your Beetle?

Steve, the Le Mans start involved my 'mechanic' running across the track, and handing me [with the seat belt attached] the ign. key. They were concerned that drivers would not 'belt up' if they ran to their cars.

Was that the Lugarno Neptune ? Archie White and Jim Simpson of Neptune, wanted me to take over that station, but I knocked them back. No Beetle model.
