Whitewalls and seats help!

I'm looking into getting white wall inserts for my 65 Bug and would like to know peoples opinions on them. Whether the tyres have to be tubeless/tubes to use them. Where they insert into the tyre etc.
ALSO, does anyone know what year this seat is off?

Thanks so much for your help!

Ernie1965, you might have seen my trike around Shepp.

Have had a lot of dealings with inserts last few years. I really dont like them. They have to be installed correctly and there is a youtube video on how and the guy is doing it on a vW rim. see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpwUPnzd3jQ  They done last long and the wider they are the less time they last. The higher the tyre the longer they last.

If you are ok using 6 ply tyres then there are white wall tyres with white on both sides (used for hot rods) in a size 600-16. I have this tyre on the front of my trike and its fine.

I have had all work on my tyres done by Antique tyres in Heidelberg Melbourne http://www.antiquetyres.com.au

My front tyre is a propper white wall. The rears are inserts. The frotn 600-16 needs a tube. Inserts on radials do not need tubes.

My ex girlfriend said "its me or a trike". Her big mistake.

If they stick to the rim they are fine but need cleaning fairly often. If they fail they seem to continually come out of the same rim. Mine lasted a few years but only drove it a couple of times a week if that.

Have inserts on the 63 bug.Tubeless 185's
Fitted them ourself.redneck style. took of wheel,Deflate tyre, put sleeper on edge of tyre and drove another car onto sleeper to brake bead.fitted insert, reinflate and hit with mallet to locate properly...Done.
They can be apain to keep clean.
Plenty of utube clips to show how to do it.

That seat is a 1964 or earlier as it has the 'flat top' back design.

Australian '65 seats had 'roll top' backs.
