[SOLD] FS Vic - 1958 Rat Beetle
August 57 build 58 big window semaphore, so quite an early one.
I pulled this car from a barn in Lake Boga, and was amazed to find how solid this car was.
I had to do very little rust repair (only 4 or 5 spots in entire car)
I spent the next 12 months rebuilding the entire car mechanically including the following:
Rebuilt standard front beam (with adjusters and steering dampener) and standard spindles (new king, Link and tie rods). New wheel bearing, slave
cylinders, master cyclinder, and original steering box rebuilt. Rebuilt 1500 swing axle box with new bearing and seals. New suspension rubbers and
cables throughout including heater cables (even thought no heaters used). Machines drums with nearly new brakes shoes and master cylinders (also have
spare new brake slave cylinder and brakes shoes in spares). New rubber brakes lines and quite a few of the hard lines replaced as well.
Interior is mostly 1958, with original seats and hood lining. The rubber mats are reproduction ones, and the carpet is non genuine, but a stock
looking replacement.
Motor is a fully rebuilt 1680cc. running a line bored as41 case with standard rods and crank. engle 110 cam, heavy duty single valve springs in Ported
and polished heads running stainless valves in standard sizes. Lightened 8 dowl flywheel, CB performance manifolds and twin rebuilt and modified 36
IDF Italian Webers. The oil system is full flow running a remote filter (braided lines with an fittings), and to finish off the engine has stainless
merged extractors and magnaflow muffler. The motor is running j pipes, but I have a set of heat exchangers to go with car. The engine made 94hp at
rear wheels on dyno, and has done 5000-10,000 klms of weekend driving over the last 2 and a bit years.
The bodywork is as I pulled it from the barn. It has had a respray at some point in its life, but it was quite a while ago (a guess at 20 years).
New window rubbers, and door seals.
The car does not come with semaphores as they had been bogged up in respray. My intention was to fit repro 12v new ones, but never got to it.
Wlheels are BRM’s with 205’s on the back and 135’s on the front all with plenty of tread left. The original steel wheels are included along with
original hubcaps.
This is a well-sorted and reliable beetle, with really nothing to spend to keep it as a rat. cruises easily at 100klm, and is a lot of fun around
town.
I have a heap of spares including original split case box (needs rebuild), original beam (uncut) and another 4 inch narrowed beam. Plus boxes of other
parts new and used as well as a Flat 4 stainless roof rack. A gt style exhaust, as well as 4-5 boxes of various spares.
Chasing $8000, but willing to look at a part trade for a 60’s beetle project with at least $5000 cash.

Bump - I counted up the receipts and what I have spent in total and they came $8000 not including purchase price of the car or labour as I did most of
the work myself. This is a great well sorted car!
