The Ferrari 458 GT3 of Maranello Motorsport won the race, giving Ferrari its first victory in the Bathurst 12-Hour. It was the third marque in the
last three years to win the endurance event, with Mercedes winning in 2013 and Audi in 2012. The number 88 Ferrari was driven by John Bowe, Craig
Lowndes, Peter Edwards and Mika Salo.
It was a very close finish, with the winning Ferrari taking the chequered flag just 0.4 seconds ahead of the number 84 HTP Motorsport Mercedes-Benz
SLS AMG GT3. The third-placed Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 was just 2 seconds further back, and the fourth-placed McLaren MP4-12c was just half a second
behind them. So only 3 seconds between the top four cars after 12 hours of racing. The best VW Group vehicle was the Phoenix Racing Audi R8, which was
fifth - on the same lap 35 seconds behind the winning Ferrari. The top five cars all finished 296 laps - these were all Class A, GT3 Outright
category.
The fastest lap was set by the Kiwi driver Shane Van Gisbergen, in his McLaren 12C, 2 min 03.850 sec. This is the fastest time ever set by any
sedan-style car around the Mt Panorama track, and is around 5 seconds quicker than any V8 Supercar.
In Class B (GT3) the winner was a Porsche 997 Cup, 286 laps. Class C (GT4) was won by the Donut King Lotus (204 laps). Interestingly, Class D (2.0
litre) was won by another VW Group vehicle, a SEAT Leon Supercopa - basically a Golf R with a different body. Jeff the best BMW (also class D)
finished 20th. The best Japanese car was a Subaru WRX STI Impreza in 24th. There were no Suzukis taking part.
With the death of Australian Fords and Holdens in 2016-17, I really hope taxi racing will die out and this will be the future of top sedan motorsport
in Australia.

The close finish was due entirely to the safety car allowing the field to 'bunch up', just before the end of the race.
It WAS a 'Great Race', despite safety car interference.......unlike the other so-called 'Great Race'.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

I watched the last hour of the race and my appreciation of Craig Lowndes ability as a racer increased by 1000 after seeing him take to the dirt to
avoid a slower car at the top of the mountain.
Forget all of the taxi racing promo's, if you get to see this one move you will be amazed.

Yes I saw the last hour also. Great to watch, sorry I didn't get to see more.
Craig's move reminded me of his late and great mentor Mr Peter Brock, he pulled off a similar rally excursion in a similar spot up the top in his VK
if I remember correctly the one where he lost his windscreen and so they kicked out the rear screen in a lighting quick pit stop.
When Craig knows he's in the hunt for a podium he's always great to watch.
Well done Craig and co-drivers and crew!
