Air Cleaners
Stock rect air cleaners like the Supers have work really well.
They're also butt-ugly and look funny. Oh, and I don't have one.
I do have an oil bath air cleaner though, and they work well for mild 1600s like the one I'm building, but they also tend to spit crap everywhere on
bumpy gravel corrugated roads......which is probably 10-20% of where I drive.
So, first cut the oil bath section off, keeping the very base (it will be used as a top for the new air cleaner).
Put a hole in an old chrome air filter lid, then slide it over the centre trumpet to get the right height for whatever filter you want to run. I'm
using a Unifilter, when oiled properly they last for yonks, and in all my stuff I have yet to find ANY dust at all in the inlet tracts on my bikes or
my cars.
I've doubled-up the filters, so you can see how it sits inside.
In case you think it's only a piddly air filter that will be restrictive, this old air filter sat on a single Stomberg BX on top of a 1641, that
pushed a '63 Baja to high-15s. I rekn that means they have enough flow!
Cool! No oil splats, good dust protection, full hot air flaps, with no intake restriction on a centremount manifold.
And it doesn't look like an upside-down toy boat.

It's a bit ugly I guess, but hey, it's gasless MIG welding up 0.6mm, so I can live with it. The centre trumpet is still 3" long.

I thought I'd try to get the interior paint colour a bit closer to VW Off-White, so played around with a few little extra tints.
Yep, completely and utterly wrong!
Looks a lot like Porsche Stone Grey though when you're next to it.
Hhmmmmm............
Oh, at least this bit went sorta according to plan I guess.

"Superstocker" rockers
I needed a new set of rockers, so I bought some brand new OEM VW "Rhino" rockers that take 9mm adjusters.
So then I thought I'd get some new OEM quality adjusters with wide feet, but without having to worry about sketchy and patchy aftermarket quality
control or the horrendous cost of Porsche elephant feet.
So, drill out the 9mm adjuster threads......
Tap for the new adjusters.
Stock 8mm adjuster on the left after 86K km of good hard service.
Wide foot adjuster from a late Kombi on the right.
Big difference in contact patch for the valve tip.

More "W" decklid stuff. I had to do it over a couple of times due to lack of skills and technique!
Here we are now, and after cleaning up with a grinder and 1/2 tub of reofil it should be ready for priming.
A panel man I am not, but hey it's good fun to try, and I can always get another decklid if I stuff it up.
I especially like the rounded shape of the decklid now, I managed to get rid of that ugly bulge these things have stock, happy with that.

I want to test the flow of some simple head and valve seat work, and the easiest way to do it is to use a basic and simple open manometer.
So after taking the centre out of an old spark plug (as per David Vizard, great idea!), I put a bit of poly tubing in with resin.
Now I have somewhere neat and tidy to put the clear tubing hose from the manometer.

CAUTION: non-VW content..........
........but still sorta interesting.
I haven't been able to get much shed time, been a bit off-colour, but did feel up to pottering a bit, so plonked an old race can onto my perfectly OK
street bike commuter, just made up a slip-on.
Just for testing purposes of course.
Anyway, the interesting bit.
Look at the colouring on the short joiner pipe, seems to be drawing nicely, an even gradual blend of colour, a good sign of working OK. You should
have similar colouring on an exhaust collector, any spots or banding and you have a mismatch somewhere.
Normal VW stuff resumed soon hopefully.........

I rekn Rocket Industries over there, Aeroflow, Speco maybe, they're all in Sydney.
If you get the 3/4"-16 remote oil filter and sandwich plate set-up, then you can use all the very common filters available. I've just bought a box
of Mann 719/30 filters for my New Beetle, but they also fit this mount perfectly too, so I have the option of just making it go with a stock VW filter
to start with if I want (MUCH easier packaging due to size, and sharing service parts).
