Best Pan base for Oval Beetle build
Hey guys,
There is probably a thread on this somewhere, but its difficult to search for 'pans'. What is the best and strongest pan to base a build on? It will
need to fit with a Oval shell.

Can you use any year pan for this if you're going to mod the rear? And what if you wanted to do an a-arm conversion on the front - would that change
the pan you start with?

Looks like someone may be heading back into the vw world. Can't stay away for too long 
Other than a strut front end, I think you can use anything. But keep in mind you will probably want IRS rear and beam front end if you are going to
modify it for A-arm steering. Not sure if the A-arm mods are legal in NSW.

Hi Mick
For engineering purposes the earlier the better, so a semi auto 1500 pan or a 1500 manual pan that can be converted to IRS. The 76 pan would require
compliance to later model ADRs etc.

Once bitten always bitten Kev! Yeh, I've heard the auto pans are best. Has anyone got a a-arm front end engineered in NSW? I know there are the red9
kits and Mendeola (or whoever you spell it) kits - but haven't actually seen anyone who got these engineered.

Steve, what years are the semi auto pans? late 60's for 1500 pans? Is semi auto stronger than manual pan? Whats the difference? I think the pan on my
sti bug was 68 semi auto pan.

The 68 and later semi auto pans have the balljoint front and IRS just like the 76 pans but without the problem of having to comply with the later
ADR's.
You have to run a clutch tube though if you want to run a manuall gearbox.
