disc brakes
Hi
I recently bought two front beams from a 72 type 3 for my 67 notch, with the plan of converting to disc brakes. As the discs are 4 stud and I want to
stay with my wide 5 wheels I am trying to find a rotor to suit (can find kit's for sale but not just the rotors). Has anybody done this conversion
with wide 5 rotors and if so what ones did you use. Also as the calipers are of unknown condition ( I am assuming they will need a rebuild if
rebuildable at all) would I be better off buying a disc brake kit and if so which one.
I would also like to put disc brakes on the rear as well using the e brake which kit would you suggest for this apllication.

I also have the phone number for the guy who I bought the beams off and he had a squareback shell with all panels a pan and a fair bit of other type 3
stuff he is trying to sell if anyone is interested.

discs
Hi nsuwift, I went with CSP discs front and rear. They are rock solid, come with TUV certification but are probably the priciest option (approx.
AU$3,500). If the TUV certification isn't as critical, then I have a set of front and rear Sherman wide 5 kits - still in the box. They available
for purchase as I cant use them - I am happy to discount them see them go to a good home! there is everything you need from master cylinder through
to stainless braided cables. I purchased the gear from John Shermann in advance of my car restorer (renovating my 64 Karmann) starting the reno work -
as the restorer only wanted to work with TUV stuff. Although I do have the number of an engineer that certifies Johns stuff. I recently drove a
Porsche 356 race car that (I am fairly certain) had Johns discs and they worked well and I was using the Porsche under race conditions. I am happy to
chat more if you want.

type three drums on the rear until you can get the brakes you want.

Hi
The rotors in the Vintage Vee Dub kit for Beetles might be usable, it uses a wide 5 rotor. If its a 72 beam it should have the bigger Type 4 style
callipers.

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the late response. May have to put my disc brake plans on hold for now. Seems as if this is going to be a more
difficult and expensive exercise than I had aticipated. I bought the two beams for $5 each and was hoping to do the conversion for somewhere under
$1500. Thanks for the offer on the john sherman parts but as I may in the future do a subaru swap, I will need to have the brakes be road legal.

It is a legal mine field buying any parts that need engineers approval, if the vendor has done the right thing he should provide you with a engineers
report so it makes it simple for you to get them on the road legally, be aware if you are left holding the engineering bag with out any form of
engineering paper work,, I have been there with the above mentioned brakes and in the end removed them from the car as the bias and performance was
poor.
