Speedo probs

Ive been having trouble with the speedo in the kalita of late, its a VDO, I sent it in for repair some time back as the odometer stopped working, had a new bezel fitted at the same time, well 12 months on and I got around to refiting it in the car but noticed that the trip meter wasn't working so removed it and took it back to be rectified, (done under repair warantee) well it lasted another 142 k's and then the speed was registering as around 60 when in my estimate I was doing at least 100k's, the odo and the trip stopped working, so it's back to the repairer again (registered VDO people). I'm thinking its stuffed, so I'm thinking of a full replacement, digital may be the go, the hole in the dash is 80mm and not much else will fit, maybe a little larger but not much. any thoughts / recomendations?
thanks
Don

But what of the warning lights and fuel gauge?

Alos, for the OP. Dunno how they screwed up the speed reading as it's just a magnetic disc that drags the needle round the dial. Stronger the magnetic field the faster the needle indicates.

as for the odometer, it's just a case of replacing worn gears with new ones. The later speedos used plastic gears and the one that wears most or can strip is the first worm gear as it's driven by the steel speedo input shaft. If the gears are too tight then they will wear quickly or jam and strip.

Hmmm, look ok but either too small or MPH thanks for the lead though Ian, I may send them an enquiry to see if they can solve my problem.

Not loking good for a repair, the last message I got was that it is "falling apart inside" and they tell me that they are no longer available new,. I'm waiting for them to get back to me with more info.
psimitar, that bit about the gears being too tight may be the problem, maybe the last time it was in they didn't adjust it correctly and caused the problem, maybe.:(

click on pics of speedo on right side of the page. its a vw speedo, you could cut dash or make ring to fit speedo.

I've just finished converting an older style MPH speedo into a KPH speedo. Parts are the issue so I had to buy a later KPH speedo for the odometer gears. As for the speedo face i have created a few transfer to go onto the old MPH face once I've sanded it and painted satin black.

there ain't much to the inside of a speedo and especially on later plastic geared speedos it's the gears that wear/break as the rest in steel. Well except for the odometer reels and incrementing gears.

I reckon you may be better off just getting a used second hand one from Ebay. heck if I was close to you I'd come take a look at the one you've got.

Oh, i did have a thought that the speed reading incorrectly could well be a worn speedo cable. The square end that goes into the speedo could be partially rounded and so slipping and causing the issue or worse case scenario is the speedos input shaft internal square drive has partially rounded. As I said before the magnetic drag cup is unlikely to give an issue unless for some reason the permanent magnet as degraded.

Oops
Looks like I didn't give all the info correctly, please excuse my stupidity, this is not a standard speedo, it's a VDO but not a standard VW job, only 80 mm diameter, as you would be aware the standard VW ones are much larger, no warning lights etc just a basic speedo. Not much room in the dash for a larger unit.
Thanks
Don

Speedhut is your friend. all different sizes, customised your own colours and bezels etc, all different speeds in MPH or KPH from 40 to 400. With and without idiot lights, indicators, fuel gauges, tachos inside. Most of the multi gauges are 4 inch though i think.

The legality of the GPS speedo would be questionable as it can drop out in certain circumstances making the vehicle unroadworthy.

pft, if your that worried. I'm sure I could find a few things on anyones car that is more questionable. the fact that it is actually acurate for the other 99.99% of your life easily outweights this.
Tunnel is the only issue ive had, and then on a bug the tacho is an easy way to go about those few minutes of your life. seriously, GPS speedo is heavenly.
Not to mention the fact that you have 2 trip meters, an acurate odometer, 1/4 mile time test, 0-100km/h test. and no need for speedo cable oiling of replacement ever again.

No worries dude :)

Maybe just do a bit of Google searching for an appropriate replacement. Been ages since I went looking for additional gauges so VDO is the only brand that springs to mind but know there are plenty more good makes out there.

Altho I'm still intrigued by the speedo you have cos if it's mechanical, ie with a cable drive, then I'd like to see what is going on inside it.

So after taking carefull note of all the above advice, changing my mind several times, calling the &*%#@!s that have my speedo to ask what is going on (haven't got to it yet sir, had a couple of the techs off last week, parts are a bit hard to obtain, no probs with parts it's a VDO :grind:) I bit the bullet and ordered a GPS Speedhut job, slightly larger than the one in there now (well used to be in there :grind: ) and a reasonable price, considerably better than the same jobie on evil bay. I did consider the advice on the legality of a GPS speedo so got in touch with RTA, or whatever they call themselves now, got told that they don't have anything to do with speedos and they gave me a number for Vehicle Safety department or some damned mob, they advised that they are only concerned with new vehicles (that is before a new model is released onto the market) and told me that I need to talk to Fair trading, (what the F does fair trading have to do with speedos I asked, "don't know he said but you need to talk to them") so I called Fair Trading and got some dope who only wanted to know how I knew it had been wound back !??!?!?!. Three quarters of an hour later I decided that if no one in officialdom knows then I'll do what I want, sure they don't work too well in a tunnel but how long do I spend driving through tunnels? So I ordered it from the States, let's see if they come through as promissed.
Oh, and after that ramble, thanks to all who took the time to advise, it realy helps to have a sounding board sometimes.
