Kombi Gearbox question
Hello
I have an 82 side shift gearbox
I bought for my baja
I also bought a shift kit so I can (with some mods ) the standard shift tube
Now
It isn't the side shifter box we thought it was going to be
It actually shifts from right at the back not behind the cv as thought
Can I
Change the the rear selector housing unit off a 1600 1800 2lt gear box to turn it into a normal 2lt kombi box
Or do I have to make up some sort of weird contraption to make it work
Thankyou
Terry

Internally that box is almost identical to your regular 2lt box,
(slight different 3rd and 4th ratio in some versions)
but the intermediate housing does not have provision for the regular 2lt shift mechanism, (and shift rails are also different).
Also, nose cone bolts are 8mm instead of 7mm thread and likely the wrong bolt pattern.
It could be rebuilt to use the regular 2lt intermediate housing, shift rails and linkage, and nose cone etc.
You will also have to drill and tap the side of the case for a fill plug, which on the later box you have, is in the intermediate housing.

The intermediate housing is totally different on the normal 2lt box,
when compared with yours, and also the 1600.
I had a look in the workshop, and found a housing the same as yours,
and yes, to make the 2lt nose cone work,
you will need a 2lt intermediate housing and all the shift parts.
It may be easier to modify you new shifter to account for the different position on yours
when compared with the intended use.

I know of an 1800 box that was jumping out of reverse because it had a 1600 gear in it.
