Not sure about nsw but in qld its illegal unless you are a registered hire/limo licenced company.

Probably is illegal in NSW........almost everything else is.

Yeah i think theres a bit of a grey-area from what i've been told.. If it's just "a friend lending you their car" or if they're invited on the
guest list it's alright.
I don't see a problem so long as you know where everyone stands regarding cost/ if something happens (e.g.; agreeing on not being liable etc)...

My sister in law rang a few car clubs wanting something for her wedding. She was told the same each time. Nobody even willing to do it unofficially.
Apparently in qld you can't just be invited, you actually have to be immediate family. Even if you don't charge any money for it you can still be
done, and let's face it, wedding pics are perfect evidence.
Some family friends with a classic jag offered but looked into it and were told its a no no.

Does anyone know if the legalities are any different if the car is being used strictly for photos and not transportation?
Call stockers boring if you want, but VW sure sold a lot of them that way

I suggest you call the motor transport department for your state, whom issues the limosine plates / permits etc as to where the line is drawn.

Photos are ok as far as I'm aware. As long as the car owner isn't paid any fee (not even unofficially to cover petrol). It's just transport that is
the issue. Our friends with the jag were going to get the limo permits but the cost of the licence is phenomenal as is the public liability and the
car has to go over the pits every year (not something every classic owner wants done) so they gave it a miss.
It explains why the places that do it want $500 to drive to a wedding or formal.

There are a lot of technicalities in this topic that need to be considered, and big fines that can be a result of incorrect usage. Even if you enter
a 'friendly deal' with someone and invite them to the wedding, any payment (e.g. even fuel money or beers) are considered a hire and can result in
charges.
Its not about huge fees, it is about hiring a car and driver that have been approved to drive for the public, and includes a medical check of the
driver, background check on the running of the company itself, public liability insurance, and a number of other things.
As for photo's as opposed to driving, it might seem OK in theory but with photo evidence of some involvement at the event it might be hard to
convince the authorities that the cars didn't drive and were only there for decoration.

Surely you'd have to be super unlucky to get caught though right?
This isn't a police or interpol department.
This is just the transport department.
Its not even a traffic infringement nor a criminal act, its a breach of legislation.
