Help I think my battery is cooking- update


Recently put in a new alternator 75 amp from George at classics(cheap and Chinese ). It was going ok and think I wired the changes correctly but don't have a multimeter to confirm. A friend quickly checked but couldn't stay, appeared to be over charging.

Tonight when I turned the car off I could hear what sounded like bubbling of the battery fluid. Car was only on for a short time as I am having an idle issue also. Don't know if this is related.

Bug, 1600tp , carb 34 pict3 standard dizz


Any ideas things to check?

Ps horn sounds too wound up compares to when the generator was in and headlights still react to the engine speed like a generator. Will be brighter after I throttle up a little...?

Dumb question but did you disconnect the old regulator????

If the new alternator has two wires it will have a built in regulator, I would also replace the thick red wire from the Alternator to Battery as it was originally designed to cope with 30 amp and may overheat and cause problems.

I didn't to start with, but after I did, this is when I noticed the above issues bar light and horn always being louder and dims on revs

Did you splice the correct wires when disconnecting the regulator?

Thick red wire to B+
Blue Alt wire to D+

Both either direct or via splice

I joined all 3 large red wires from the regulator together. Blue and green joined Into one

Have you thought about getting an auto electrician or a mechanical workshop to put a meter on it they actually do this for a living.Whatever you save by not getting it checked is negated by destroying either the alternator or battery.

You can get a cheap multimeter from super cheap for under 10 bucks... That will soon tell you if it's over charging.

Ok Ive got someone coming round tonight who owns a multi meter.
I would like to check that my wiring is up to scratch to start with.
I have joined the green and blue wire so that one runs from alt to dash light. TICK.
The three other wires previously connected to the external voltage regulator, I have joined. TICK.
That should mean that from that junction, one wires goes directly to battery, one goes to alternator, and one goes to front of car (fuse box)

Any problems here?

Tar67 what was the fix to your problem?
I just had my brother over and it is over charging massively. Starts at 14v and went over 20v. battery with car off at 14.4v

Can I buy a volt reg? Or use the old beetle one? I bought this new from George at classics a while ago but haven't put it in until now. I can already assume how the "my alternator is faulty" will go.

Alternator is coming out and going to Auto Elec recommended by them.

I respect your opinion but if I ran off to the paid help every step of the way I would be broke, lacking in knowledge and not working on my own car. I have a much newer car I don't choose to work on. Most workshops want to get paid for their time, and I fully understand why, so I choose to only go to mechanics etc when I have exhausted all other options.

No offence mate I saw this so many times when I had my own workshop and in most cases it cost the owner a lot more than if it had been corrected in the early stages,I understand where you are coming from and am pleased to encourage you to learn about your vehicle. Cheers Les

over 20V! holy crap!

That is the worst I ever seen or heard of. I worked as an auto elect straight after high school years ago and the worst I recall was 17V and fried the battery good and proper.

your reg is stuffed or possibly some issue with the voltage sense going in to the alternator.

UPDATE
Had voltage regulator replaced, $90 Bosch parts used even though it's a Chinese copy. Haven't started her up yet but all back together.

Bit of a bugger dropping the engine to replace the generator with alternator. Only to pull engine out one week later due to faulty alternator.
Oh well here's hoping it is now trouble free !!
