Distributor disassembly


Hi All

I've broken down my stock Bosch SVDA distributor to give it a damn good clean having reverse wired it and burnt out the points/ condenser.

I've got to a stage where I can now see the plates and springs of the centrifugal advance in the body of the dizzy but I want to extract the main shaft.

At the base of the shaft there is a retaining spring/ ring that when removed exposes what looks to be a retaining pin. I'm thinking that if that pin is removable I ought to be able to extract the sift from the dizzy body to a) clean the plates properly and b) on reassembly correct the fat that my worm gear is incorrectly set by 180 degrees.

Question 1 - Can anyone tell me if what looks to be the retaining in is removable? I've given it some gentle taps without success. Happy to give it some heat and an almightly wallop if I can get some assurance that I won't buggerize it even more than it is at present...

Question 2 - Anyone have any tips on reconditioning the points cam on the shaft - mine is pretty worn down?

1. the pin is rolled spring pin, drive it out using correctly sized drift..
2. if the cam is worn, don't bother ...replace...

Yup, if the cam is that worn then either try and source a good spindle to replace yours otherwise it's a new SVDA for you or a good used Bosch.

I do have a big bodied vac only bosch, VZ/PAU I think, that I've overhauled. Just needs a new vac can. I do have a reconned 1950s VJR4BR8 but want to use that on my 1200 and reckon it'd cost you more than a new SVDA to prise that from me. :)

the pin on some distribuators is a steel pin that can be hard to remove, i have had to press a couple out, as above. if the cam is worn replace it.
