New Buggy engine?


I'm looking into putting a different engine in my buggy and selling the Kombi 2lt
which i am running in it at the moment. (if this question is in wrong place please move it)

My buggy is a LWB MaxFX
Weight: 850kg
Gearbox: 1600 Kombi
Brakes: Discs front drums rear (soon to be discs rear)
Engine: Currently a 2lt Kombi motor with Twin Dellortos


Im looking at either a 1916 or going to a 2276. Now I'm new to playing with VW's guys so id like
your thoughts and some feedback on what YOU think would more suit my needs.

My reasons for changing engines:
I want more power & a reliable engine. Its used mainly driving on the road Kruzin with my family and going over the sand dunes for a surf, but i do want plenty of power for NON family driving! :lol:

Unfortunately id be looking for a turn key engine as i can't transfer much from my current engine, so id be selling my Kombi 2lt as a complete engine.

why not rework the 2L? decent head/valve train/cam combo and it will smash type 1 based engines in reliability and performance all day everyday.

Hi Vlad

I am new to the VW engines mate so I'm on a steep learning curve trying
to figure out which way to go. I'm more than happy
to hear people's thoughts but have also been told by many how expensive the
2lt type 4 is to rebuild.

seriously, the old man rebuild my t4 about 10 years ago now.
still pulling strong and has more than enough power for what i want in my bug and its stock with a mild cam. in a buggy it would be even more powerful.
look in to a rebuild and do it once.

Ill make some more enquiries and see what I can
come up with. I don't know any history with this
engine but I'd be keen to get some prices & options
to have this rebuilt.

I'd be interested to know how much it'd cost to be
rebuilt to 2.2-2.3lt. What kind of $$$ and what average hp would
these be looking at tuned & ready to go.

I think I'll also be looking to put a 1800 kombi box in
to give me a little more top end cruising as this 1600 box is
very low geared.

Sign up to The Samba in USa and Volkszone in the UK. Loads of info for T4 engines there.

Do your homework b4 deciding which route to go. The T4 is a much stronger and reliable design than the T1 and only the exhaust ports that limit power yet compared to a T1 of similar capacity the T4 is still the better engine.

As for a gearbox, do a search on the web for VW gearbox codes as there are plenty out there to make things better. Maybe even just a change in diff ratio will help you out.

Maybe give Wayne Penrose a call, he does plenty of high performance Type 4 stuff :tu:

Thanks guys for your input.

I will make some more calls after the
long weekend to see what I can find out, I'm at the point of
not knowing which way to go.

My thoughts were if I were spending $$$ that with a T1 motor
I'd be getting basically brand new.

If I could have a quality rebuild for 6k PAZZAN I'd
probably go with that. I'm not after the flashiest
motor, just reliable with lots of balls. Lol

Any ideas what go there getting out of the street
T4 engine?

$6k :lol: I rebuilt my 1200 for just under $800 including recon heads. If you know how to use the spanners then you can keep the costs way down. :)

oh and rebuild costs don't increase very much just cos the engines a bigger cc. It's all relative :)

Do the maths, if you build it your self and import the parts it will still cost you about $4000 to $5000 for the long block including the machining, plus all the other parts you hang on it like the exhaust, tin ware, ignition, clutch. I have just done it with a 2054.

I did do the maths and just saying that you can build an engine without spending too much depending on what spec engine you are after.

I also buy from the UK and have found it far cheaper than the USA cos the USA shipping is prohibitive.

But hey, I'm just putting it out there and no need to get catty about what's been said. Break the mold for a change aye :)

you must have sucked @ maths, $800 won't buy a DECENT set of heads if DD is looking for more power over the 2L, your $800 1200 build is totally irrelevant.

DD what kind of power you after? I would second talking to WPVW.

Cheap & reliable stay as close to stock as possible,:yes: 1776 cc is a good allrounder fro a type 1 motor ...if u want reliable 200 hp better start thinking subaru .get a halfcut ,talk to Todd[subaru gears ].

I heard raby is reintroduced engine DIY kits again for t4. No one has ever been disappointed with one of those.

reliability and performance are 2nd to none with one of those. Most customers have had there engine going for 10 years+ without having to touch anything internally.

Hi guys

I'm sorry I didn't put too much info in my original post as to
what type engine, amount of hp or even how much I intended
on spending. Truth be known I I didn't know the answer to
any of them lol

I appreciate all the replies and leads you guys have given me over
the last couple of days.

Fish26 I'm not really sure to be honest, but I have driven a bug recently
of Rods which behaved nicely and was a pleasure to drive.
PAZZAN I'm really wanting my my first buggy to stay VW so I will be
staying away from Todd lol

My 2lt is going fine ATM just a small oil leak so I will be driving it
until I work out which way to go.
